Movie Review: This is the End (2013)

Written by Anthony Sargon

We officially have the year's best comedy. "This is the End" is a blast from start to finish, and thankfully doesn't squander its amazing cast. It stars some of the biggest names working in comedy today, all playing themselves, trying to survive the apocalypse. It's crude, memorable, and hilarious.

"This is the End" is not heavy on plot, but here's the setup: Jay Baruchel arrives in Los Angeles to hang out with old buddy and fellow actor, Seth Rogen. The two of them head over to James Franco's house for a party, and everything seems to be going just fine, until the apocalypse happens, of course. Seth and Jay barricade themselves in Franco's house along with a few other actors, and hilarity ensues.

The plot is simply an excuse for us to watch these actors interact with one another, and that's the film's main draw. If you're a fan of "Superbad", "Pineapple Express", or any Apatow movie for that matter, you're probably going to love "This is the End". Everyone plays an exaggerated version of themselves, which is really funny to see. James Franco parodies the fact that he's really into art; Seth Rogen is a huge pothead, while Jonah Hill plays a super lovable version of himself. I can't forget to mention Craig Robinson and Danny McBride, who also add their brand of humor to the mix.

The cast has great chemistry, which leads to some great improv and hilarious back-and-forths. They even reference each other's movies, which is a nice touch. The movie features plenty of celebrity cameos. I'm not going spoil any of them here, but one cameo that was prominently featured in the film's marketing is a coked-up Michael Cera, and for good reason; the man is a scene-stealer. He's barely in the movie, but I guarantee you won't forget him.

I have to hand it to Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who make their directorial debut with "This is the End". The movie is very confidently directed, and the pair actually manages to pull off some legitimate jumps and scares. They're usually followed by a dick joke, but you'll be startled nonetheless.

The movie really doesn't do much wrong. Yes, some jokes fall flat and a couple of sequences slightly overstay their welcome, but when the script delivers that many gut busting laughs, it's easy to overlook the negatives.

Anthony's Verdict:

"This is the End" is the funniest movie I've seen all year; It takes full advantage of its awesome cast while delivering a ton of laughs. Don't miss it.

Numerical Score: 9/10
