Syria: EU's Decision on Hizbullah Was Made at American, Israeli Orders

The Syrian Foreign Ministry condemned on Tuesday the European Union's decision to list Hizbullah's military wing as a terrorist organization.

It said that it took the decision at “American and Israeli orders to target the resistance in Lebanon and the rest of the Arab world.”

“Such a measure encourages acts of occupation and aggression,” it added in a statement.

On Monday, 28 EU foreign ministers unanimously voted to blacklist Hizbullah's military wing.

To get the required agreement of all 28 EU member states, ministers had to overcome reservations in some members that the move would further destabilize Lebanon, where Hizbullah plays a key role in politics.

Accordingly, EU political and economic ties with Lebanon will be fully maintained in a delicate balancing act.
