A U.S. lawmaker strongly opposed to U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan and the Libyan conflict is on a "fact-finding" visit to Lebanon and Syria, his office said Monday.
Democratic Representative Dennis Kucinich held talks Monday in Damascus with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s state news agency SANA reported.
He is also scheduled to visit Lebanon for talks with President Michel Suleiman, his office said in a statement.
"Peace is not just the absence of war," Kucinich said in the statement.
"Peace is a conscious, active pursuit that requires work and communication. My work as a member of Congress requires that I learn firsthand about events in order to better understand policy alternatives for America and other nations."
He also planned to meet with democracy activists and non-governmental organizations during the trip, which his office said came "at the request of many of his constituents."
