Angry Arida Residents Attack General Security Base after Cross-Border Killing

Angry residents of the northern border town of al-Arida attacked on Sunday the base of Lebanon's General Security after a Syrian man was killed in a cross-border assault, the agency announced.

General Security said in a communique that the residents smashed the windows of the base and nearby vehicles with rocks.

The attack came after the man was killed from gunfire from Syria when he was trying to cross the river that separates the two borders, said the state-run National News Agency.

The residents also blocked the international highway with burning tires near al-Arida crossing, calling on the Lebanese army to deploy in the area to protect the border.

But General Security said it worked with the army and security forces in coordination with some al-Arida residents to restore order.

It added that General Security officers worked with the judiciary to unveil the circumstances of the attack and find the perpetrators.
