Saniora from Egypt: No One Can Assert with Certainty Indictment Release Date

Head of the Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc, former premier Fouad Saniora, on Wednesday noted that “no one can assert with certainty the release date of the indictment” of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon in the case of former premier Rafik Hariri’s 2005 assassination.

Asked about reports that the release of the indictment was imminent and the possible impact on the new government, Saniora said he did not believe the reports were aimed at “challenging the current government or embarrassing it regarding the issue of the ministerial Policy Statement.”

Following talks in Cairo with Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf and outgoing Arab League chief Amr Moussa, Saniora added: “It was necessary to refer this case to the international judiciary in order to stop the killings in Lebanon. Thus, we must address this issue in spite of what may be raised concerning the status of the Policy Statement.”

Saniora traveled to Cairo Wednesday morning to take part in an international forum organized “in support of Jerusalem and Palestine,” state-run National News Agency reported.

The former premier discussed with Sharaf and Moussa the situations in Lebanon, Egypt and the Arab region, NNA said.
