The United Nations Security Council is in agreement that Lebanon's stability should be maintained given the volatile regional situation and its impact on the country, reported An Nahar daily on Saturday.
It said that the Security Council is almost “unanimously in agreement to take important practical measures” that will protect Lebanon in light of the increased threats of the Syrian crisis.
A western diplomat told An Nahar on condition of anonymity: “All 15 Security Council members stress the need to preserve the country's stability and take measures to achieve that.”
He ruled out the possibility of issuing a resolution on the matter, but the measures may include “clearer international support for Lebanon's policy of disassociation that all Lebanese powers had approved.”
“This support will persuade the Lebanese sides involved in the Syrian unrest to end their actions,” he explained.
A diplomat at the Security Council told An Nahar that its members are seeking to hold an international conference on Lebanon, on the margins of the U.N. General Assembly in September, to support Lebanon based on the memorandum President Michel Suleiman had sent to U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon weeks ago.
Lebanon is sharply divided over the war in Syria with a number of border regions coming under shelling from Syria whether by regime forces or rebels.
Hizbullah has also openly acknowledged taking part in the fighting in support of President Bashar Assad.
The repeated violations prompted Suleiman in June to file a memorandum to the United Nations and Arab League.
