Conflicting Reports on Explosives Near NBN Headquarters

A military expert did not find any explosives in a suspicious flower vase near the NBN television station of Speaker Nabih Berri in Beirut, the state-run National News Agency reported Monday.

NNA said the vase had dirt in it in addition to the thinner solvent.

The report came after the TV network announced that security forces have defused a bomb placed in the vase.

A source told al-Liwaa daily published Monday that the concierge of the building, which lies in Beirut's posh Jnah neighborhood, informed police about a suspicious vase after midnight.

The security forces immediately rushed to the building and after inspecting the vase they found a small bomb, which they defused, the source said.

The army meanwhile carried out patrols in the area and used sniffer dogs to search for more suspicious objects, the source added.

Speaker Berri is also the head of the Amal movement that is allied with Hizbullah. The party has faced severe criticism over its fighting alongside troops loyal to President Bashar Assad in Syria.

Hizbullah's overt role in the Syrian civil war has sent sectarian tensions soaring in Lebanon, and street clashes have erupted on numerous occasions in recent months.

Recently, small-scale clashes have taken a turn toward Iraq-style car bombings.
