U.N. Chief Ban Ki-moon praised Prime Minister Najib Miqati’s commitment to the international resolutions, al-Liwaa newspaper reported on Tuesday.
Ban sent a message to Miqati through Lebanon's Special Envoy to the U.N. Nawaf Salam welcoming the Premiership’s commitment to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, Security Council resolution 1701 and all the other resolutions.
The U.N.-backed court on Thursday issued a long-awaited indictment and arrest warrants for the 2005 murder of Lebanon's ex-premier Rafik Hariri.
The U.N. chief contacted Miqati soon after the release of the indictment urging him to announce his commitment to Security Council resolution 1757 that established the STL.
Ban called on authorities to cooperate in handing over the suspects for trial. The arrest warrants were issued against four members of Hizbullah.
The STL, set up in 2009 by the United Nations, is the first international court with jurisdiction to try an act of terrorism.
