Chief U.N. Chemical Arms Inspector Says Syria Report Done

The head of the U.N. chemical weapons inspection team on Friday said he has completed his report on Syria and will deliver it to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York this weekend.

Speaking by telephone from the Netherlands, Ake Sellstrom told The Associated Press that he didn't know exactly when the report would be released publicly.

Sellstrom confirmed that "it's done, but when to present it is up to the secretary-general."

He declined to comment on the report's conclusions.

Sellstrom's inspection team was charged with determining whether deadly agents were used in Syria, not who was responsible.

Earlier on Friday, Ban said U.N. experts will confirm in the report that chemical weapons were used in an attack near Damascus.

"I believe the report will be an overwhelming report that the chemical weapons was used," he said.

Ban also gave a U.N. estimate that 1,400 people were killed in an August 21 attack which led to western threats of a military strike on President Bashar Assad's forces.
