United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly highlighted the importance of the Baabda Declaration that calls for disassociating Lebanon from regional conflicts, reported the pan-Arab daily al-Hayat on Sunday.
He told the daily that he had recently warned Hizbullah leaders of the danger of rejecting the agreement.
The United Nations urges all countries to back the declaration because it embodies the wisest policy Lebanon can adopt, he explained.
Addressing the U.N. General Assembly and the meeting of an international support group for Lebanon, Plumbly remarked that the meeting demonstrates the international community's unity over supporting Lebanon's stability and institutions, especially the army.
He predicted that the international support group's role will not be limited to the General Assembly, saying that he expects its support to continue after next week's gathering.
Moreover, he lamented the failure of the Lebanese political powers to form a new government because the existence of a cabinet would have facilitated international efforts to support the country.
The meeting of the international support group for Lebanon is aimed at helping the country cope with the flow of Syrian refugees into the country.
It is scheduled to be held on Wednesday under President Michel Suleiman's chairmanship.
He traveled to New York on Sunday to attend the General Assembly.
