Charbel Expresses Relief over Security Deployment in Dahieh

Caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel expressed relief on Wednesday for the success of the security forces deployment in Beirut's southern suburbs.

“We perceived a good political and security reaction. The important thing is that the security plan works out and achieves security in the area,” Charbel said in comments published in al-Joumhouria newspaper.

He noted that there are certain goals that he hopes the process achieves.

“We are seeking to stabilize the security situation in Dahieh and across Lebanon,” Charbel noted.

He called on all the “capable powers in Lebanon to become partners in preserving security and facilitating the mission of the security forces.”

Around 1,000 army troops and security forces deployed Monday in Dahieh where Hizbullah normally keeps a tight grip on security.

The security points were established after car bombings in the area killed 27 people on August 15 and wounded more than 50 on July 9.

Following the bombings, Hizbullah turned the southern suburbs into a fortress with guards in civilian clothes policing the streets, stopping and searching cars, and asking motorists for their identity cards.

Charbel said that several foreigners residing in Lebanon and don't have legal permits were detained on the first day of the security plan and several illegal cars and motorcycles were seized.

He added that the “important matter is to prevent any bombings or security breach in the area.”
