Movie Review: Think Like a Man Too (2014)

After being treated to incredible sequels like 22 Jump Street and How to Train Your Dragon 2, it’s pretty disappointing to sit through a slog like Think Like a Man Too. Despite a few committed performances, the film is a lazy, boring, and unfunny mess.

The first film was a quasi-adaptation of Steve Harvey’s book, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, which at least gave the film some raison d’être. I myself didn’t enjoy it, but it’s significantly better than this generic romp. In Think Like a Man Too, all of the major characters are reunited in Vegas for Michael (Terrence Jenkins) and Candace’s (Regina Hall) wedding, which leads to every scenario you expect to see in a Vegas comedy, except it isn’t funny this time around.

At the end of the first film, every major character had learned a valuable lesson about love and the opposite sex. Take Kevin Hart’s character, Cedric, for example. He was a recently divorced party animal who came to the realization that he didn’t want to be alone anymore. The sequel absolutely ignores all of that. Cedric is once again single, and it’s because the film needs him to be.

The film also feels like it’s four hours long, mostly because it arbitrarily switches back and forth between different couples to catch us up with how they’re doing, as if we need to spend alone time with each of them. We really don’t. There’s very little that works; the writing is pretty awful and most of the jokes fall terribly flat, Tim Story’s direction is astoundingly uninspired, and it’s blatantly clear that the film solely exists because it’ll make some dough. Kevin Hart does his best to carry the film, but too much of him isn’t necessarily a good thing. Michael Ealy and Regina Hall do a solid job, but it’s not nearly enough to offset the film’s many detractors.

The Verdict:

Lame, lazy, and highly unnecessary, Think Like a Man Too is one summer sequel you can most definitely miss. I couldn’t wait for it to end.

Numerical Score: 3/10
