Lebanese satirist Charbel Khalil appeared before a prosecutor in Beirut on Monday after Dar al-Fatwa, the country's top Sunni religious authority, filed a judicial complaint against him for allegedly defaming Islam.

Khalil found himself in hot water after he shared a photo on Twitter that was perceived by some as insulting to Islam.

The photo shows a woman lying on a black bed-cover with the Islamic slogan "There is no God but God and Mohammed is his Prophet" on it in white Arabic letters — resembling the banner of the extremist Islamic State group.

The photo was accompanied by the words: "Sexual jihad under the Prophet's umbrella??"

Khalil appeared before prosecutor Nada Asmar on Monday. A group of supporters, including Lebanese artists and colleagues, protested outside the judicial palace, some carrying banners that read "Je suis Charbel."

The phrase "Je suis Charlie" — or I am Charlie — has been adopted by supporters of freedom of speech after last month's murderous spree in Paris at the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, which had lampooned Islam and other religions.

Khalil directs the comedy program "Basmat Watan," which in Arabic means "a nation's smiles." The program, which is broadcast on LBCI television, pokes fun at politicians of all stripes.

In 2006, Khalil spoofed Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, sparking street demonstrations by supporters of the group's leader who burned car tires and blocked roads in protest.

Khalil on Monday told reporters that the photo he shared on Twitter meant to shine a light on the harm being done by IS militants to Islam.

"The free judiciary has triumphed today," he said, after he was let go by the investigating judge.

The case, however, was referred to an appeals court and Khalil was banned from traveling pending an investigation.

the day we cannot prosecute a person for insulting any president or Minister or MP, then we will have freedom of expression.

this man has done no harm and was arrested. people like charbel khalil are being accused for denouncing corruption and evil. people need to realize that upholding freedom of expression is in their own interests.

Make up your mind once for all if ISIS represents islam or not.
If it doesnt then stop harassing people everytime someone puts an ISIS flag (or burn it) and critic what ISIS do.
Else just back ISIS openly, and stop ur hypocrite charade !

It's not about isis. If a christian group uses a cross as a symbol then that doesn't mean others can use the cross in general in a insulting way. that is what this is about. People claim to be insulting isis by using the declaration of faith in islam as a slogan for their insult or the seal of the Peophet's ring, these are Islamic symbols that have existed for over 1400 years. Yes isis use them but there are other ways to make caricatures of isis without using the very symbols of islam as a religion. This is common decency but i don't expect a single person here to agree with this. However had someone made a negative caricature showing the cross in bad light under the excuse of meaning "the LF" or someone else who uses the cross as a symbol for their group then you all would be singing a diffirent tune sadly.

I love how you state "i don't expect a single person here to agree with this" as if you are above it. You have every right to mock or do as you wish with the cross and the LF. I will not like it and may even call you out on it. However, the one thing I will not do is claim you should be jailed or assaulted for it.

some want us to believe that the real moderate islam exists in the ideology behind the ongoing fatwa on salman rushdie's life.

All religions and sects commonly use the judiciary in Lebanon when they feel they are insulted.
But this is not the problem. The real problem is that Charbel Khalil's sense of humour does not exist. The guy is so heavy compared to the comedy shows on MTV, NTV, Future and even OTV.
He does not deserve the publicity he is getting with this defamation suit.

21st century and people still think like in the middle ages... religions are pure hypocrisy when in hands of the religious people... they brandish them and enslave people to control them, no more , no less. whereas applying the religion? no body does...they jsut use it to suit their political interests...

God must be laughing at them!

defaming Islam..so what. everytime someone mentions islam they jump.Reminds me of blacks in the USA crying discrimination at a drop of a bucket. or The jewish people shouting anti semetism or the gays shouting sexual discrimination.. Its all political mumbo jumbo to advance their political agenda. No difference.
