The U.N. Security Council condemned the attack by Taliban insurgents on the Afghan parliament in Kabul, denouncing the "blatant disrespect to democracy."

In a declaration adopted on Monday night, the 15 member countries "condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack" that killed two people.

"The members of the Security Council condemned the blatant disrespect to democracy and rule of law that such an attack against the elected representatives of the people of Afghanistan constitutes," the council said.

The attack Monday ended after two hours with the death of the seven attackers, according to Najib Danish, an interior ministry spokesman.

The health ministry reported 31 people were wounded. All lawmakers, some of whom were in session at the time of the attack are safe, the Kabul police said.
