Syria Referendum on New Constitution on Feb 26

إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربية W460

Syria's President Bashar Assad has decreed to hold a referendum for a new constitution on February 26, the official SANA state news agency reported on Wednesday.

"President Bashar Assad issued today a decree setting Sunday, February 26, as the date for the referendum on the draft constitution," SANA reported.

Syrian state television said the new constitution would allow the "people to govern the people" under a new multi-party democratic system.

It said that under the proposed text, freedom is "a sacred right" and that any violation of personal freedom is considered a crime punishable by law.

On Sunday, a commission tasked with drawing up a new constitution submitted a draft charter to Assad, SANA reported, adding he would review it and send it to the People's Assembly before a vote.

In January, Assad said a new constitution was being drawn up by a committee set up in October to replace the current one, which enshrines his Baath party's dominant role.

At the time, he said it could be put to a popular vote as early as March, although that date for the ballot has now been brought forward.

Syria's government lifted a state of emergency in April last year and in July adopted a law allowing a multi-party political system.

the spineless opposition has managed to drag your bashar to his knees, decimate his economy, and god willing one day snap him from his bed. You kiddo need to read some history, google the afghan war and see what happened to najib allah who was supported by the USSR (not russia). It might take a long time, but the end is a mathematical certainty and you are hallucinating if you think things will go back to pre-march 15.

Thumb jcamerican 16 February 2012, 11:31

You are right. Bin Laden was supported by USA against Russia. What do you think of that for history. You will be dumped soon.

Missing zakariia 16 February 2012, 14:15

What's a "mathematical certainty"? That the US always wins?

What more would the people of Syria ask for. The president in his glory has ordered the ratification of a new constitution. The people should drop to the ground and kiss his feet for giving them a constitution that will make their lives so fulfilled they couldn't sleep from happiness and joy. I commend Assad on this jesture and for the attention he gives to his people. Yes, he killed more than 10 thousands and imprisoned more than hundreds of thousands but this is besides the point because he was upholding the law which says that he should defend the people of Syria. Now the Syrian people can go to sleep and live in peace. Assad has proven once again that he's a real Assad full of mercy and compassion. I think other countries, such as Europe and the USA should copy this style of governance and style based on the best of the people.

Your real enemy is any suni who asks for freedom, why dont you be a man and admit that. You would not mind if bashar uses chemical weapons and kill 100 thousands sunis tomorrow. This is precisely why Syria needs a civil war because it is filled with filthy nazi people of your sort. Sunis are the vast majority and you need to get over it.

Thumb jcamerican 16 February 2012, 12:03

When Saddam did it, no one gave a shit including USA.

Thumb lebneneh 15 February 2012, 13:04

The problem with these backward Arab leaders is that they are always behind the curve...If he had done this 8 month ago then it could have solved the problem but now after all this killing...Syria is practically in civil war and there is continuous killing what difference would a referendum make?!

Thumb lebneneh 15 February 2012, 15:32

Mowaten come on man...emergency law lifted?! What does that mean if people get shot at if they demonstrate? Just be a bit objective. You really honestly believe "Salafi- militias" are the only people fighting?

Missing samiam 15 February 2012, 17:34

mowaten,

the government said that the law was lifted, but kept the same regulations in place and required for example, that political protests required permission from the interior ministry to become legal. So, since they were illegal already, what really changed? You can take rat droppings, put them in pretty little boxes, and call them whatever you'd like. At the end of the day, you still have rat crap.

Read between the lines people and stop accepting what politicians tell you without question.

Thumb Marc 15 February 2012, 19:10

Unfortunately, it is in a civil war. It is looking like 1975 Beirut now! He should have done this within 2 years after he took over the presidency NOT a year after protests.. and also, who will supervise this referendum and how legitimate will it be?

Missing realist 15 February 2012, 19:35

they need a civil war, why should the syrians accept living with people who support their death?? every country in the world went through civil war..it is not such a bad idea.

Ok flame u are an idiot. How many times did the Syrians promise something which never occurred. How many times did AOun himself call them liars. What did they do that everything was forgotten. Also for your FYI go ask quanso and his friends the 2awmeyeh and they will tell u that that are with AOun. Also most 2awmeyeh are either alawites or maronites. Your friends in the fpm will tell u everything. Wahab, franjiyeh, quanso these are the true traitors that Aoun allied himself with!

Default-user-icon The Truth (Guest) 15 February 2012, 17:24

Oh yeah, having a referendum while two of the biggest cities (Homs and Hamah) are war zones, the levels of logic practiced by this government are beyond human comprehension. Should be like the great 'democratic' elections of Assad from years past where the new constitution will get 99.8% of the vote.

Thumb jabalamel 15 February 2012, 17:24

To Mowaten & Flamethrower
The Lybian constitution under Kaddafi was much more democratic than that, heck Kaddafi didnt have the title of president, yet that didn't stop him from being a defacto dictator for 40 years.
Bashar will put nice things on paper, but on the ground, any opposition threatening his power will be killed or imprisoned...that his view of multiparty system...other pseudo branches of his Ba'ath party will be put out for the show.

Missing jimbei 15 February 2012, 18:57

You say that the opposition isn't united and i reply by saying that it is a good thing. The current syrian regime only represents the alawite sect and the upper class on the other hand the opposition represents all facets and sects of the syrian population including alawites and druze. What this entails is that the opposition is as legitimate, if not more, than the current syrian regime. The same way that M8 accept hezbollah as a legitimate party, they should acknowledge the syrian opposition to be legitimate as well.

Missing jimbei 15 February 2012, 19:01

To the defenders of this liar, to the insecure minority, just remember that you had it all but decided to ruin and protect what you have got, Assad followed his father footsteps and he won't be able to put out the flame as it is too late. There will not be any freedom under the current regime, because you will always need a permission from the Shabiha for the media to enter his country same as our Shabiha cordon their territories.
