U.N.: No Confirmation of June 30 Syria Meeting
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةThe U.N. said on Tuesday it had not yet received confirmation of a key Syria meeting expected to take place at its Geneva headquarters on Saturday.
Peace envoy Kofi Annan is to convene an international meeting in a drive to find a diplomatic solution to the Syria crisis, but the details have yet to be announced.
"We have had no confirmation," U.N. spokeswoman Corinne Momal-Vanian told reporters.
It is hoped that it will be confirmed "this afternoon, perhaps tomorrow," she said.
Annan said at a press conference in Geneva on Friday that he hoped the permanent members of the Security Council would attend the meeting as well as countries with influence on the regime of President Bashar Assad.
The discussions will focus on what can be done to ensure the implementation of Annan's six point plan which has been repeatedly breached by both the government and the opposition since it came into force on April 12.
Monitors say that more than 15,000 people have died since the revolt against the Assad regime erupted in March 2011.
