Harb Says Cabinet Refused to Back President’s Request on Telecom Data

MP Butros Harb revealed on Sunday that President Michel Suleiman was behind the request to hand over the telecom data to the security agencies regarding the assassination attempt against Harb and the other assassinations.

“The cabinet didn’t voice its support to the president’s demand after incorrectly interpreting law 140,” Harb told An Nahar newspaper on Sunday.

The law 140 pertains to wiretapping and was issued in 1999.

According to Harb, the cabinet’s rejection to hand over the IMSI data, which is a unique code used to identify an individual user on a GSM network, is obstructing the investigations.

He expressed surprise regarding the cabinet’s obstruction of the investigation after attaining information on one of the suspects, in the assassination attempt against him, who is prominent Hizbullah official.

Harb escaped an assassination attempt early July, when three people tried to plant a booby trap inside the elevator of the building where his office is located in Sami Solh.

“The cabinet should instead call on the suspect to testify and prove his innocence,” he stated.

He lashed out at the cabinet, saying that if they’re waiting to modify the law 140, which would need at least 6 months, then “we would be giving the offender the chance to commit new crimes.”

Harb criticized Hizbullah on wiretapping the Lebanese “freely” while the state with all its security agencies is deprived from acquiring the telecom data even though it wouldn’t violate the citizens’ privacy.

The Batroun lawmaker expressed deep regret that “some lawmakers in the cabinet who are acting upon their political stance instead of committing to the law,” he added.

According to various media reports, Mahmoud Hayek, is the main suspect in the attempt on Harb’s life, but he refused to appear before the investigative bodies because he is a member of Hizbullah’s security apparatus.

Do we have to turn to America and ask for what we need from their ECHELON ears? How pathetic this country is beyond understanding. I guess one has to be Aounist or Shiite to enjoy the current unhealthy and illegal atmosphere.

Poor president have no say or influence over the cabinet. Plus what is the purpose of having the telecom data, if it will not be released to the authority. Is it to be used hundred years later to back up history books claims.

Boutros Harb was talking about back and what not when he actually and subliminally was pointing to the hump that developed on his back due to his incessant bending over for and being mounted mounted like a camel by every enemy of Lebanon, the latest being Jeffy Jeff Feltman, his master and commander.

They only handover syrian opponents to their deaths not tetlecom data, because they cherish public liberties ! Tehy only handed over critical data to Rustom Ghazaleh and Ghazi Kanaan in their heydays!
Hizbollah got caught red-handed in the Harb murder attempt. No need for a lenghty STL inquiry in this instance. They gave a full view of how their operational contract-killing model operates, and the wife of Mahmoud Hayeck the 'lift expert' , the hizbollah operative who was identified through the camera recordings, , could only refer the police investigators to the security apparatus of the Hizb ! Hariri, Gemayel, Hawi, Tueini, etc.. only one hand, one DNA signature behind it all: The Hizb. However, in recent murder attempts, the Hizb has become so self-confident of total impunity, that it doesn't even take the extra precautions it used to in the past: It operates in broad daylight, faces uncovered, with an army car on stand-by helping with the escape route.

The HIzb is proving day by day it has become a terrorist organisation with global reach. The intelligence community knew that a long time ago. The general public became aware of it with the killing of the terrorist Mughanyeh, and the article of the Der Spiegel related to the Hariri assassination, which surprised as well seasoned a politician as Joumblatt. No one else but the Hizb fingerprints are to be found in terrorist acts all over the world these days, and sometimes mishaps, such as in Antelias explosion a few months ago , when two hizbollah operatives got killed.
