Lebanon is trying to pick up the pieces and return to some level of normal life after a war with Israel that decimated large swaths of its south and east, displacing an estimated 1.2 million people.

The Lebanese military said it detonated unexploded munitions left over from Israeli strikes in southern and eastern Lebanon. Elsewhere, the Lebanese Civil Defense said it removed five bodies from under the rubble in two southern Lebanese towns over the past 24 hours.

A fragile ceasefire went into effect in Lebanon and Israel last week but challenges still remain.

Israel continues to call on displaced Lebanese not to return to dozens of southern villages during the initial two-month halt to fighting. It also continues to impose a daily curfew for people moving across the Litani River between 5 pm and 7 am. Many families who want to bury their dead deep in southern Lebanon are unable to do so at this point.

Since a fragile ceasefire went into effect last week, Israel has violated the agreement dozens of times. Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri counts more than 52.

The number of violations has risen since Speaker Berri's interview with al-Joumhouria newspaper was published Monday, on the sixth day of the truce. An Israeli drone strike wounded Monday a Lebanese army soldier in the eastern region of Hermel, while another drone targeted a motorcycle in Marjaayoun, killing a State Security agent on duty.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s senior adviser on Arab and Middle Eastern affairs, Massad Boulos, has said that Trump has “honored his promise” as to working on achieving peace in the Middle East once elected, noting that the ceasefire in Lebanon was an “achievement” made by U.S. President Joe Biden “in cooperation” with Trump.

“It is our duty to follow up on the ceasefire agreement and we hope it will be quickly implemented the same way it was quickly reached,” Boulos added, in an interview with LBCI television.

Pope Francis called on Lebanese politicians on Sunday to urgently elect a new president, with a view of restoring normal government functions in the country.

"I address an urgent invitation to all Lebanese politicians to elect the president of the republic immediately," the pontiff said at Saint Peter’s Square at the end of Sunday Angelus prayer.

President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday named Massad Boulos, a Lebanese American businessman who is the father-in-law of Trump's daughter Tiffany, as a senior adviser on Arab and Middle Eastern affairs.

Boulos arranged Trump campaign efforts to engage the Arab American community in Michigan, organizing dozens of meetings in areas with large Arab American populations angered by Democratic President Joe Biden's backing of Israel's offensives in Gaza and Lebanon. Trump won the majority Arab American city of Dearborn Heights on his way to sweeping Michigan and other swing states.

Lebanon's health ministry said an Israeli strike killed one person in the country's south on Monday, while the Lebanese army said an Israeli drone wounded one of its soldiers in the east.

Lebanon's official National News Agency has repeatedly reported Israeli fire, including strikes, since a ceasefire went into effect Wednesday.

Hundreds of people, many in tears, gathered in Beirut's southern suburbs late Saturday at the site where former Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike two months ago.

The Israeli military carried out air strikes in Lebanon Saturday against alleged Hezbollah activities that it said "posed a threat," days into a fragile ceasefire between it and the Iran-backed group.

U.S. Major General Jasper Jeffers of the Special Operations Command Central arrived in Beirut on November 27 and will serve as a co-chair, alongside Senior Advisor to the President, Amos Hochstein, for the implementation and monitoring mechanism of the cessation of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon, the U.S. Central Command said.
