Suleiman: Essence of Baabda Declaration Must Be Incorporated in Constitution

President Michel Suleiman stressed on Saturday the need for all powers to return to their commitment to the Baabda Declaration, reiterating that it will safeguard Lebanon from regional unrest.

He added: “The essence of the Declaration should be incorporated in Lebanon's constitution.”

He made his remarks during a seminar on the Declaration that was held at the Phoenicia Hotel in downtown Beirut and that was attended by caretaker Premier Najib Miqati and a number of officials.

The president stated that the agreement was unanimously approved during two back-to-back national dialogue sessions.

“It does not call for Lebanon to become neutral from Syria because such a demand requires certain measures and an agreement of its own,” Suleiman said.

The Declaration respects the Taef Accord, he continued.

“It is not a temporary agreement and we believe that we will be more in need of it in the future,” remarked Suleiman.

“Whoever is disregarding the Declaration now will come to realize its importance in the future,” he noted.

Moreover, he said that the Baabda Declaration does not address the details of a defense strategy for Lebanon, but it mentions it, explaining that it does not serve as a defense strategy.

“Should Lebanon's fate remain tied to regional developments? Do we want to lead it towards the unknown? Shouldn't Lebanon be kept off this path?” he wondered before the gatherers.

The Baabda Declaration was approved unanimously during a June 2012 national dialogue session.

It calls Lebanon to steer clear from the developments in Syria.

Since then however a number of local powers, especially Hizbullah, have taken part in the fighting in Syria.

Hizbullah's fighting alongside the Syrian regime has incurred local and international criticism and it has repeatedly been urged to withdraw its fighters.

The terrorist party said the Baabda declaration was dead the minute it was born.

@ southern " How will these extremist enter Lebanon? Demarcate and control the border along with strict border crossing rules will prevent most from being able to come in to stir trouble. For this to happen you need a strong state that Hizballa is an obstacle for.

Sobhana Lah. All khomeynists have the same BS arguments.
I admire their talent for lying/taqiya, always blaming sunnis for all the problems.
It's easy we dont want of ur hizbos/pasdarans. They're a militia serving Iran in Lebanon and in Syria. GCC dont have a militia in lebanon serving them.

Oh how I miss the old glory of Souk-El-Gharb, before it got destroyed by the civil war and now getting infested by HA.

Missing helicopter 16 November 2013, 18:51

They stopped helping because they are afraid the weapons will end up with HA, not because they LAF will attack Israel.
Remove your Iranian hat and wear a Lebanese one and things will get better for all of us.

With politicians like the ones we have and a president like you, I wish we had Military rule with you residing on top of the pyramid. However such a scenario must be short lived to clean up the country from all the sold out and Mafia heads and then restore the Democracy we all deserve. The reason I want such scenario short lived, because absolute power corrupts absolutely and no human being is immunized from that.

lol, in the constitution? he is naive believing that M8ers will follow the constitution if it is against the interests of hezbis....

Thumb souk-el-gharb 16 November 2013, 20:05

@ helicopter: souk-el-gharb is also the battle where LAF brothers of different confessions fought together. It is a paradigm of what modern Lebanon should be and will be inchaAllah...

Suleiman's ill timed statement is nothing more than naive talk given the current political stalemate that exists in Lebanon now ...

Lebanon needs pragmatic decisions taken to restart governance but Suleiman chooses to engage in wishful thinking.

And then after this ridiculous, meaningless and pointless declaration is bi se7r sa7er inserted into the constitution, it will be much, much, much (enough muches already?) easier to restore back into the constitution some of the powers of the presidency that were robbed by... well... umm... duh... the Sannis with the help of... well... umm... duh... the BAAAAAAD "ASSad" guys. Take my word for it.

well here we go again. So called president calling for distance from regional developments, what a joke. If Lebanon was somewhere on Mars then yes I agree we can ignore everything, but we life in the most conflict ridden area on Earth. To think we can ignore what goes on around us is naive at best. and we all know the reason for him and his March 14 allies are talking about this - the weapons of the resistance. Well keep talking you idiots because that is all you will ever be able to do.
