Report: Saudi Aid to Lebanese Army Will Take Effect within a Month
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةThe high demand on some of the military equipment pledged by Saudi Arabia to the Lebanese army will result in a short delay in delivering them to the military institution, reported the pan-Arab daily al-Hayat on Sunday.
A French source told the daily however that the Saudi grant will take effect “within a month.”
In December, the kingdom pledged to grant 3 billion dollars in aid to the army.
A delay in the delivery of helicopters that are included in the deal is expected due to their unavailability because of the high demand on them.
The source stressed however the need to implement the deal as soon as possible.
It emphasized that Saudi Arabia and France seek to bolster the army “because they view it as a state institution that represents the whole of Lebanon and not just one political camp against the other.”
A French delegation is expected to head to Lebanon within weeks in order to tackle the upcoming presidential elections.
It will also most likely address the grant to the Lebanese army.
On December 27, President Michel Suleiman announced that Saudi Arabia has decided to donate three billion dollars with the aim of purchasing French weapons for the Lebanese army as soon as possible.
It emphasized that Saudi Arabia and France seek to bolster the army “because they view it as a state institution that represents the whole of Lebanon and not just one political camp against the other.”… no one can argue with that.
Allah Yihmeek Ya Rabb for opening our eyes to the truth. Excellent comparisons indeed!
Flamethrower: I insist on doing your eulogy. Let me know one week in advance so I can schedule your event. I am busy next week. Perhaps, the week after?
FT - m8 has been in government for almost 3 years and not a bullet from Iran. The army did not refuse a grant from Iran. When negotiations started on type of weapons, Iran was looking to sell and not grant. It is why not even an m8 government followed up on this.
rafehh. jibto joura la FT. Indeed. Iran wanted to sell. Not grant.
Iran only grants to Hezb Iran to do policy of Iran. (like if iran gave a damn about the palestinian cause or about israel)
So according to the illiterate flamethrower, his M8 government got the army the 3 billion in military aid. It is a shame such people are allowed to distort the realities.

Southern… your beloved Iran only delivers weapons to their militia and that is the bottom line. Now stop waisting time with your silly comments & go tend your goats.
@general_puppet. "tending goats" is as honorable as performing brain surgery. In fact, tending goat is what my grandfathers (both of them) did as young men, and I wear their legacy as a badge of honor. Please spare you shallow comments.
I'm a member of the Lebanese Forces and I don't hesitate in defending my political adversaries like Southern when they are hit with comments below the belt.
FT which of your distinct ministers in M8 facilitated this grant, was it Mansour or Bassil?
all we need is defensive weapons ie
anti aircraft missiles , anti war ship missiles , and anti tank missiles
lets see if our army gets these weapons , or old stock of Humvees
French weaponry is of higher quality than Iran weaponry. Our army deserves the best possible equipment. That's all I care about.
Nobody gives us help for free, whether it is Iran, KSA, France or the US. There is always a debt to be repaid down the road. The minute you accept aid, you are compromising the independence of you national decision making. That's the price we pay for being a poorly managed country. The responsibility for this sorry state of affairs is collective and not isolated to any political coalition.
jabal,
I personally do not believe there is any price to pay for this aid for the following reasons:
1) President Sleiman is a clean man and he would not have accepted this aid if there were strings or conditions attached.
2) I believe that KSA benefits from reigning in HA (as part of curbing Iran's influence). This intersects with the desire of the President and Most Lebanese to have the LAF be better armed than any militia as a first step to build the country. We can not build a nation controlled by sectarian militias or Palestinian arms.
The weapons will hopefully give them enough power to go all the way in to da7yi and the camps.
They can send us a cheque anytime.
Russians proposed us outdated aircrafts that need dozens of $ millions to be refurbished and maintained. We need helicos and something like supertucanos.
Plus those MIGs dont come into our defence doctrine.
Iranian cant arm themselves, let alone help us...
indeed...what's funny is that FT never mentions exactly what Russia and Iran were willing to sell us...junk that has no use for our current needs (counter-terrorism/urban combat and border patrol).
cedre that is exactly ture. The Russian offered helicopters for free but the maintenance contract was too expensive and the army refused it. As for the Iranians, they offered no arms but to sell arms.
could the geniuses like ft and southern, explain us why LAF should get iranian crappy weapons ? Do they ignore that 2006 'war' was mainly fought with RUSSIAN rpg29 and kornet atgw ?
Iran is begging Russia for modern weaponry, and we all saw in South Ossetia war how outdated russia military is...
In all fairness, FT was first called illiterate by Popeye. He was baited and took the bait. You insulted him as well by calling Syrian. If you want to be fair, report both. I'm not doing it, but I'm sick and tired with all those cheap insults that neither help resolve our problems nor cast a positive light on the Lebanese in general.
Iran did offer to equip the Lebanese army with Iranian weapons and when they sat sat down to facilitate the deal the Iranian wanted to discuss the prices and how to pay for it. It was not a gift it was for sale deal.
The only sectarian rubbish only seems to come from FT either take a more balanced view or shut up
Dear Flamethrower: Please mind your language on this site. Youe language is becoming unbearable here. I am terribly offended by your offensive behavior. Sorry, I am obliged to vote you down.
Here you go again the_roar saudi arabia is lebanons ally and major provider of assistance since day dot if they didn't invest in lebanon we wouldn't have a lebanon because we would be totally bankrupt so do you hate saudi arabia because they are a muslim country or what ?
True i totally agree but Lebanon unfortunately is in a time of need and saudi arabia has never let us down when we needed help
Smaller countries have to be allied with bigger countries. Economies like ours depends on tourism and foreign investments. There are certain areas here that only survive due to foreign aid from countries like your own, Australia. It's easy to say things, but have you noticed none of the politicians tried to block the deal?? This might give the army power to go in to Palestinian camps. What exactly do you think the Saudis want? I thought it was to kill that guy...
I'm lebanese first and last i wish all lebanese would come together and sort out our differences and keep religion a personal choice not a national one
They reconstructed Dahieh and shia areas only pal Iranis only the shia not for lebanese and why would Saudi Arabia not tell its citizens to avoid lebanon when your friend the sewer hiding war hero threatens and blames them for planting bombs
Saudi arabia are giving to lebanon and lebanese not just shia i have nothing against shia but this is lebanon and the shia have to accept and live with and respect other religions and stop threatening the country with their weapons when things don't go their way.
Don't worry about what Iran has done for Lebanon. Ask what Lebanese have done for Lebanon.
really ice-man, I am rolling over lolllllllllllllllllllllllllllll. how do you come up with jokes like that. seriously stop it. you are killing me.
It was Iran and their proxies hizbollah that got us in to the damned war in the first place so spare us this moral support dribble
lol i see.. unable to answer... exactly my point. M8 ers praise iran but they do not know why, only because it supports hezbis but not lebanon...
oh peace, you got us m8 guys once again. Yes we admit, we are dumb founded by your profound question. I guess we are just not up to your level. Please ask us something a little easier. I am lost for words, I am still trying to figure out if Iran and Iraq are the same country, they sound so much alike.
If H.A are part of lebanon then why don't they obey the laws of lebanese starting with lets say merging their arms with the lebanese army then lets say abiding by the baabda declaration and stay the hell out of syria's war but because they are not part of lebanon they do no comply so save you crap about Iran giving support to lebanon please.
To be lebanese is unconditional in every aspect so if the state and president ask you to abide by the laws of the land just accept it izrael's only interest in lebanon is guarding its border even though it's palestinian territory remember why izrael invaded lebanon the palestinians wanted to fight their war from lebanese territory. Am i right?
Also they take that damned AK 47 from the top of Allah's name on that flag they use there's nothing above Allah full stop!
Reportedly, the aid will consist of two squadrons, fully equipped, of the latest French fighter-bomber. The Saudi king already has sixteen such squadrons, no single aircraft of which has ever been flown in the skies above the kingdom. A spokesman for the security liaison team described the measure as "win-win". Asked who won under such a frivolous defence policy, the spokesperson replied, "Are you talking to me--are you talking to me?" and glared in the direction of the questioner, although it was hard to say what he was looking at because of his dark glasses.
hope they give the army only defensive weapons ie
anti aircraft missiles, anti warship missiles , anti tank missiles ,...
not a stock of Humvees that are out of commission
god bless lebanon
@ all commentators, as usual, typical lebanese thinking, blablabla saudi arabia and iran blablabla. Let me tell you something you might not know or because as lebanese , we like to read the big title and start our illusions. Read details please. This help of 3 billion is on several years, if i remember well on 5 years which comes back to 600million $ a year. Just to inform you in a state that has been paralysed like ours for more than 8 years since 2005, not to mention before with the syrians but hey we could have put the blame on them back them :) now its different. Well 600 million in a year is nothing if you pay 80000 salaries, soldiers , generals, retirements ( as u know how they are high in leb), maintenance of tanks, humvees, artillery , training, clothes, ammunitions. so your 600 million a year is nothing maybe the extras would buy some light weapons, some trucks, and more clothes. its nothing but some tips for the army, not a takfiri-salafist evil plan.
Now if this help constituted 3 billion $ a year, for 5 years, which means 15 billion $, that would be alarming and would have meant something. We could have bought at least 10 F16 or 10 MIG-29, some choppers, 100 new tanks, artillery, etc...
Not defending Saudi Arabia, we all know the vicious stuff coming out of there, but this help is nothing more than a little push for Sleiman and the army to give him a bit of psychological support and maybe to tell him they are here to help him or Qahwaji if they decide a military takeover is the best option, since our lovely m14 and m8 as usual are not finding common grounds on their respective "commissions"
Oh don't worry too much about it Southern. Our friend here is merely displaying his exceptional eloquence and agile intellect.
Don't you worry about it Roar. We're all in this together. All of us who called this country home.
Nothing in the world could make me any happier, know today that the KSA is making good on this grant pledge, that it will be reality within a month. No matter what side we may belong to, today such a grant will finally make our LAF the strong institution that we've all been calling, and for decades now. Finally, once our army becomes a strong, authoritative and assertive army, then believe me all of you, we will be on our way to becoming at loooooooooooooong last, the Lebanon we all want to see, to live in, to serve, to enjoy, prosper ad above all, to be able to tell our children and their children, that they can stay here, work, live and prosper inside their own land. I am one who today says, a big Shukran to the KSA and to those who made it a reality, and I'm thankful that nations are beginning to know our truth, finally.
Right on brother i totally agree , now they accuse you of being m14 or a sunni and any other crap their polluted minds can conjure they don't see the big picture that it's about lebanon and the lebanese only
Fact, do take into consideration that our LAF, plus our air force have been able to repair and keep in working condition equipment that has been around since the last century. What I know is that weapons are purchased with servicing in mind, so in truth there should be no major concerns here.
@thefact we are Lebanese after all, don't write us down, we are savvy, creative and have so many ways to meet head on all challenges. Take for example the MEA service center at BIA, it is one of the best, run entirely by Lebanese techinicians. We Lebanese are also at the forefront of development and some of the biggest projects in the world, to be honest with you, I see nowhere where our our army or LAF cannot service any equipment it receives, not or in the future, but I'll also be as frank, that our worst enemy is the divisions that people are trying to bring between us Lebanese, so as I see it? technical issues are no issues to us, that is a foregone conclusion, but the divisions are.
Hopefully when that happens lebanon will be a oil and gas producer and hizbollahs arms will be merged with the state
Dear jabal, I agree that no one should resort to insults as it really leads nowhere. I read a lot of comments and your defense of flamethrower may seem a bit biased. Please read his comments on the following article and judge for yourself if anyone attacked him first. It seems it his normal mode of operation to insult others.
http://www.naharnet.com/stories/en/113588-mazloum-reiterates-bkirki-s-support-for-all-embracing-government
Warrior, I fully understand that my defence of FT might be perceived as biased. I defend FT's right to express his opinion specifically because he and I don't see eye-to-eye politically. A forum open to all points of views means a lot to me and I am convinced that good will eventually come out of it. Getting opponents of M14 banned from this forum will turn it into an echo chamber, and will widen the divide between us Lebanese.
I read FT's comments on Bkirki article, and of course it is out of line.
FT, M14 are not pigs. They love their country as much as you do but they have a different opinion than yours about what kind of country Lebanon should be. Please attack the ideas, not the person(s) behind it.
Look people, I'm not the person to moralize here. I also reverted to insults at times when some article or comment struck a raw nerve.
All that I'm saying is let's TRY to have a constructive debate, that's all.
Bleaze Actionman, stop insulting the_bore's boyfriend Fifi. Fifi insults everyone, but he is not able to defend himself, because he is in tears from your comments.
What are u talking about??? Everything comes with a price, but what exactly do u think they want from us?? Our oil?
It could be to help keep the Syrians out, seeing that they are losing in their plans there. Bolstering our army could be used to help tackle the jihadist spillover from Syria who are funded by Saudi. It could be to protect all their investments in Lebanon, banks and property included.
Either way, it's not to create an armed militia stronger than the army. On the contrary, it was donated to the army.
Btw, some here are making fun of us for accepting the donation... I just have a question, when you are donating to someone do you look down on him for having no pride?
I think they want our army. This is not a normal bargain, normally you buy arms, Saudi is just trying to blind people with their dollars again. Very sad
