Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri held talks Sunday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in the French capital Paris, where the latter was holding preparatory meetings for the Geneva 2 Syria peace conference.

According to a statement issued by Hariri's office, the meeting was also attended by Russian Deputy FM Mikhail Bogdanov, Russian Foreign Ministry director of Mideast dept. Sergey Vershinin and the ex-PM's advisers Nader Hariri and George Shaaban.

The talks involved “a thorough discussion of the situations in Lebanon and the region,” according to the statement.

Lavrov was also expected to hold talks with his American, French, and Jordanian counterparts, as well as United Nations and Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi.

A meeting between U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Brahimi, and Lavrov is set to be held on Monday.

The Geneva II peace conference will be held on January 22.

One of the most experienced and brilliant politicians in the world today, Mr. Lavrov, will meet one of the most inexperienced, immature, overconfident, and not so bright (let's be nice) Mr. Hariri.

I wish their meeting can be broadcast live on TV for the world to see the difference.

In his pijamas

Missing watan-libnan 12 January 2014, 13:26

the_roar how can you defend Aoun when he robbed us the lebanese and ran off in his pijamas to france and continue to rob us the lebanese while in france and now his son inlaw bwesir is robbing us lebanese are you lebanese or just a christian

Thumb freedomarch 12 January 2014, 18:19

Working as Lebanese Minister will pay for a private jet? well the gas ? from where?

Missing watan-libnan 12 January 2014, 13:43

Who do you think facilitated Aouns get away the_roar it was the Hafez assad so get your facts right while Aoun left our soldiers still fighting and btw wasn't Aoun the one who sat in france and said he was going to break Hafez assads head and then went to syria to kiss bashars shoes

Missing watan-libnan 12 January 2014, 13:52

Proof is right there in front of you Aoun is alive in lebanon do you really think the syrians would leave him alive if he didn't tow the syrian line and please explain Aouns wealth how much does a lebanese general earn please lets do a audit of Aouns and Bwesirs current wealth and you will see how he robbed us lebanese

Missing watan-libnan 12 January 2014, 14:08

Look don't get me wrong Aoun started off a good man and we all wanted syria out of lebanon some of our great leaders like bashir gemayel and kamal jumblatt and all due respects to other martyrs who paid the ultimate price our problem now and forever will be the 1 million plus palestinian refugess and the 1 million plus syrian refugees i fear they will breed us lebanese out of our dear country .

Thumb cityboy 12 January 2014, 15:03

let me guess watan-libnan, if Aoun were to join the m14 you would then say that Aoun is a reformed man and a good honest general once again.

Thumb montreal 12 January 2014, 22:51

You came to the right place boy, sadly although I cannot tell you what would M14 reaction be if Aoun returned to his roots as I am not a tea leaf reader, a guesser, a turbaned swami, a Michel Hayek clone or a "by next Tuesday" drunk in a stupor, what I can definitely and without a shadow of a doubt confirm to you and your little friends is that while still in France and he made the deal with the Syrian occupation and the so called Hezb Allah to return and go under their tent they no longer accused him of being a Zionist or an embezzler. Of course although he's been the most loyal servant, they never kept their promise to make him president, they never intended to anyway, but they did make his thitherto penniless SIL very rich very fast.

Missing watan-libnan 12 January 2014, 15:35

I'm not m14 or m8 or any of that rubbish since when did having an opinion on someone mean i was part of a political movement i wish these guys would get together and agree on uniting lebanon once and for all i don't care about this religious rubbish i want a secular government and its sole focus should be only for lebanon and the lebanese .

Roar: there are over 100 of our finest buried on the football ground of the presidential palace, they were the last standing officers, who kept fighting to the last man, they would not surrender because their commanding officer declared that he would die fighting to defended the last bastion of Lebanon's sovereignty, little did they know that their commanding officer had jackknifed straight to the French embassy, leaving them to die. It was a losing battle from the start and the suicidal maniac couldn't see that the West had rewarded the Syrians his head for their participation in the war against Saddam.

Hello FT Geagea should be in jail for the rest of his life for the life of me how he walks among us lebanese has got me but also in jail should be our friend Mr berri , Mr jumblatt and any other war criminal my only master is Allah my friend FT

Missing watan-libnan 12 January 2014, 17:33

Man i don't follow anyone to me they are all liars and thieves i just love my country lebanon

Missing peace 12 January 2014, 21:28

if geagea is to be jailed then should be aoun berry wahhab frangie joumblatt... all those politicians that have lebanese blood on their hands... but some here have a very short and narrow memory and want to pinpoint all the civil war massacres on geagea while hypocritically forgetting all the others....

that's what makes them not credible and worth no respect...

Thumb IndependentThinker 12 January 2014, 15:54

Don't cave in to anything anymore. I hope you learned the lesson after winning the last election, you gave a lot of concessions, and look where we are.

Missing watan-libnan 12 January 2014, 15:59

I am one who prays and who absolutely supports that the Geneva talks will pave the way for peace in Syria. I also support anyone who is working towards this, to make it happen, to bring all the Syrian factions around the same table, and convince them all, that war is not the way forward, that now, after having seen how this war went, that it is never too late to repair the wrongs of yesterday. Whats started as a noble people's revolution has long lost its soul, now the lessons are here for everyone to see and learn from. Syria's only way forward now is peaceful negotiations, compromise and to return Syria back to Syrians, all Syrians.

Missing watan-libnan 12 January 2014, 17:31

Don't kid yourself roar it's not going to go how we all would like it to go a lot won't go back because of reprisals and now some of the syrians have tasted american dollars why would they wan't a useless syrian pound

Missing watan-libnan 12 January 2014, 17:46

Well we couldn't close the borders man i mean when lebanese fled during the war the syrians didn't close their borders but at least take them to camps with all their information so we know who they are so we can send them back also i think our friend mr assad emptied some of his prisons and some of them are here now

Missing peace 12 January 2014, 21:29

the syrians NEVER wanted lebanon to mark the borders so how can they be closed? LOL they are wide open so that M8 receive their illegal weapons....

The Lebanese government was successful in returning $33 million from Aoun's bank account, which he stole from Lebanese government public funds, but the Lebanese government was unsuccessful is returning $25 million that he transferred to overseas banks.

Here's a direct quote from Christian Science Monitor:

"Since his overthrow, the government has confiscated nearly $33 million from Aoun's local bank accounts. It is trying to retrieve a further $25 million of what it says are public funds diverted overseas."
