Foreign Minister Jebran Bassil stressed on Thursday that he is following up the case of the abducted Lebanese in Syria and in Nigeria, pointing out that he will cooperate with the President and the Premier in all matters.

“I discussed the matter of the abducted Lebanese in Nigeria with ambassador Amos Oluwole Idowu and General Security Chief Maj. Gen. Abbas Ibrahim,” Bassil said in comments published in As Safir newspaper.

He revealed that a mechanism was established with the General Security to follow up the cases.

Imad al-Indari and Carlos Bou Aziz, two Lebanese expats, were kidnapped along with five other foreigners in Nigeria on February 16, 2013 from Setraco Nigeria, a construction and civil engineering company with a road project in the region, which is a subsidiary of Lebanese-owned Setraco International Holding group.

The Lebanese foreign ministry confirmed the incident.

Bassil is following up the case of Bishops Ibrahim and Yazigi, who were kidnapped on April 23 in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo while they were on a humanitarian work.

Asked if he will cooperate with President Michel Suleiman and Prime Minister Tammam Salam, the Minister stressed that “the constitution gives the president and premier various jurisdiction and based on that he will cooperate with them.”

“The Foreign Minister doesn't shape Lebanon's foreign policy but merely expresses it and participates in drafting it in cooperation with the government and the president,” Bassil noted.

Despite the fact that I am not pro FPM, and never will be in any case, but at least my conscience is clear when I say that Bassil in many ways does work in the posts he is given. Yeah, some will not like this coming from me, but it's OK, we are not here to please each other anyway. Bassil did some commendable work in the posts he was responsible for, maybe job not complete, but so far, not bad. I also have that feeling that on Foreign matters, he will do a lot more than his predecessors did. Sure, I will join those who call on him to do his best to bring back all the detained Lebanese still languishing in Syrian jails, just as I will urge him to get our folks back from Nigeria, plus the abducted clerics and nuns with the Takfiris in Syria. My only worry quite frankly is I feel that he is gonna make again a lot of money, the father-in-law never far behind blowing hot air on his in law's ears.

@ phoenix...but his father in law asserted that there was no lebanese prisoners in syrian jails...or am i just hallucinating? so how will he go against that ? it is a predicament!!

FT, Aoun said it as you said, but all said and done, he said in a way to convince us out of it, that indeed there were no Lebanese prisoners in Syria. You see, there lies the difference.
