A military expert defused on Saturday mortars found in a vehicle stopped by the army in the northern district of Akkar, the military and the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA said that the army stopped the silver Renault at a checkpoint at the entrance to the town of Shadra.

It arrested the driver, Mamdouh Mohammed Rashid after finding "huge quantities of ammunition and bombs" in it, the news agency said.

The army said in its communique that it seized from Rashid two mortars, five hand grenades and ammunition.

The military cut the road and threw a tight dragnet around the car to allow the military expert to defuse the bombs, NNA said.

The car was later taken to an army base as the military took strong security measures in the area, it added.
