Hundreds Rally in Martyrs Square in Solidarity with Syrian People
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةHundreds of Lebanese intellectuals, journalists and activists staged a rally in solidarity with the Syrian people Monday evening in Beirut’s Martyrs Square.
Amid tight security measures taken by police special forces, the demonstrators shouted slogans in support of the Syrian people and lit candles near the Martyrs Monument to commemorate the victims of a violent crackdown by the Syrian authorities on anti-regime protests.
Meanwhile, security forces prevented “a number of Baath Party officials, who were protesting slogans (shouted by the demonstrators) against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad,” from entering the square, state-run National News Agency reported.
Mustaqbal bloc MP Ahmed Fatfat was the only politician to take part in the sit-in.
MTV network, meanwhile, reported that prominent Lebanese composer and singer Marcel Khalife participated in the rally.
In a statement issued earlier, the organizers urged the Lebanese to rally in Martyrs Square to support the five-month old popular uprising and to condemn Assad’s deadly crackdown on demonstrators.
The organizers slammed Assad for ignoring the legitimate demands of the Syrian people. “The Syrians want human dignity, democracy, social justice and the end of the republic’s dictatorial nightmare.”

Thank you Silent Majority, you are the soul of the Cedar Revolution! This is not M14 or M8 issue, but a spontaneous human right issue in support for freedom from tyranny. Ordinary Lebanese who never belonged to political parties should next form a human chain from Tripoli to Tyr in support of freedom in Syria, but also to free Lebanon from Miqati's government of pirates formed by basij and mukhabarat puppets as well as useful idiots and profiteers. Lebanon's soul nurtured on freedom and democracy is being suffocated by this cabinet controlled by Hizbollah occupying force.
''Hundreds of Lebanese intellectuals, journalists and activists staged a rally in solidarity with the Syrian people Monday evening in Beirut’s Martyrs Square''
Exactly, how many Syrian intellectuals, journalists and activists staged a rally in solidarity with Lebanese people when Syrian troups bombed Beyrouth trough out the 70's, 80's and 90's???
@ Lebaneso
Two wrongs don't make it right.... That is why we lead people in the this part of the world in our constant drive to achieve democracy, freedom, and tolerance.
That is what Lebanon is and should be all about.
the most respectable people, the most respectable artists... when Marcel Khalife sings for freedom of the people, and then joins a rally for the freedom of people, you can only be so proud. Unlike those who sing for the drunk, and than tell us about how good the dictator is.
All my respect to those intellectuals and artists!
Every move towards democracy in the arab world is a an asset for Lebanon & our values. Had the Syrian movement existed in the 80s or 90s ... Syria's role in Lebanon would have been different ( and Lebanon would have been much better). We should never look back; we should always move forward.
yesterday I felt a bit strange ( Syrian flags on Martyrs square...) but felt that this could be the beginning of a new era.
@teacher, go find yourself something useful to do my friend, your poisoning our thoughts with your ignorance.
I am proud to see that Lebanon is the reason behind all the freedom movement that swept the Arabic world, and Syria, will be the best part, for years the Syrian people have been subdued in ways even worst that what we have witnessed here in Lebanon when the Syrian regime was in control. time has come and freedom is here, lets welcome it with hands wide open.
Gea, lebanon has nothing to do with the freedom movements in the arab world. We ourselfes dont have democracy and never had. We have a secterian and corrupt system where we are free to vote for the dictator of our sect, nothing else. The arab countries have one dictator, we have at least 2 for each sect. Enough taking pride in something we dont have a right to take pride in. The arabs laugh at us, why would they copy us in freedom movements when we dont even have one ourselfes? This is why people laught at lebanese, because of silly statements such as yours. The syrian people were inspired by Tunisia and Egypt. It was Tunisia that started the freedom movement, not silly lebanese who cant stop taking pride in other peoples achievements.
Its quite funny how the LF/Phalange commentors here take pride in this demonstration when it was organized by LEFTISTS hence why most of the activists that took part in this event were leftists just like the demonstration in hamra where leftists demonsrated in support of the syrian people and were beaten up by bathists for it. Why do you take credit in the actions of the left? Go demonstrate yourselfs and then be proud of it if pride is what you seek. I havent seen a single demo by LF/Phalange. The only demos have either been by leftists in beirut or by the salafis in tripoli. Quite frankly, the march14 movement has no right to pretend to support the syrian people because you have been opressing them in syria and your media has incited against the entire syrian people. Dont be fake. You never cared about anyone but your own sect (if they are part of your politcal group that is). Marcel Khalife doesnt need nor want the appreciation of people like you, he is a independant leftist!
Le lebaneso man you are so right where were the Syrian intellectuals, journalists and activists in the 70s, 80s and 90s how can anyone with half a brain argue with such well though out logic? Yeah why didn't they rally in solidarity with the Lebanese people being murdered by Assad, who got a thank you of approval from Nasrallah for his effort, beside the fact that the Syrians intellectuals, journalists and activists were being indiscriminately thrown in jails, tortured and murdered by Hafez I mean.
But that's all water under the bridge what Lebanon should do if we follow your amazing logic Le lebaneso is send it's Army and Resistance to destabilize the Syrian regime just like the Syrians did in the 70s, 80s and 90s.
Guys you gotta give it to Le lebaneso his kind of idiot cannot be learn he's born with it probably even handed down from generation to generation.
