There will be no G8 summit in Russia this year following the crisis in Ukraine, British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Monday, ahead of a meeting of G7 leaders in The Hague.

"We should be clear there's not going to be a G8 summit this year in Russia. That's absolutely clear," Cameron told British television.

"We will be meeting tonight, the seven other countries of the G8, to determine the way forward. But frankly it's Russia that needs to change course."

Cameron was speaking ahead of a meeting of leaders from the Group of Seven (G7) leading industrialized nations that was hurriedly convened by U.S. President Barack Obama last week, to coincide with an international nuclear summit.

The G7 is expected to discuss stripping Russia of its coveted seat in the larger Group of Eight (G8) grouping that Moscow gained in 1998 as a reward for pursuing a democratic post-Soviet course.
