Report: Berri's Presidential Elections Committee Violates Constitution

Speaker Nabih Berri's presidential elections committee violates the constitution and aims at closing the doors of the parliament in order to delay the presidential polls, the Saudi Okaz newspaper reported on Sunday.

A political source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the daily that the three-member committee is to cover-up for Berri's attempt not to call for a session to elect a new president.

“The committee and its endeavors is illegal,” the source said.

The committee is comprised of Development and Liberation bloc lawmakers, including Ali Osseiran, Michel Moussa and Yassine Jaber.

President Michel Suleiman's six-year term ends in May but the Constitution states that the parliament should start meeting March 25 to elect a new head of state.

The committee's mission is to seek the opinion of the different parties on the polls, including the qualities of the president they'd like to see at Baabda Palace.

according to multiple sources (and Berri knows it) it is unconstitutional. that is why the committee issued a statement that their work will end within the next 2 days.

Please geha, do tell us why this committee is unconstitutional.Do you have any legal information that you could share? If not, why not?

Thumb geha 30 March 2014, 09:51

go to any m8 site and you will see a post advising that this committee is not constitutional :) I am sure you know where to look for it :)
just for the heck of it: there is nothing in the constitution that allows for such a committee to be formed: there is only the fact that berri is obliged to call for a general meeting to elect a new president.

@ geha

"there is only the fact that berri is obliged to call for a general meeting to elect a new president."

And so he shall ... what has a committee to smooth proceedings and guarantee attendance got to do with calling to elect a new president?

Thumb geha 30 March 2014, 10:00

is it stated in the constitution?NO!
then it is illegal :)

Thumb mckinl 30 March 2014, 10:07

@ geha

Is the "national dialog" stated in the constitution ... No ?

Then it must be illegal ... No ?

Thumb geha 30 March 2014, 10:14

yes there is no such thing as the national dialogue.

ask your m8 friends (again) why they imposed its creation :)

guns outside the control of the state in the hands of extremist terrorist Iranian militias imposed it.

LOL at this Speaker and this Parliament. Berri has turned the Parliament into his little farm. Why do we need to form a committee to seek the opinions of the MPs regarding what kind of President they want. Just do your job and schedule a session, END of STORY.

No committe is required, the law is in place... Call the parliament to session, and have the MPs elect a new president. Regardless how many rounds of votes. Just follow the existing law!

Thumb cedre 30 March 2014, 23:04

strange, aoun is usually pernickety about the respect of law...
