Traffic came to a standstill in and around Beirut during the morning rush hour on Thursday after heavy rain blocked major roads, trapping commuters in their vehicles.

The slippery roads also caused traffic accidents that left at least six people injured, the Traffic Management Center said.

The heavy traffic was mainly concentrated on the Beirut-Jounieh highway, when rainwater submerged parts of Dbayeh highway, a scene that the Lebanese witness at the start of the rain season in October and November.

But the ministry of public works began removing the dirt and water that swamped the highway, allowing cars to head slowly to Jounieh.

In one neighborhood in Kesrouan, vehicles were almost completely submerged and houses were flooded with rainwater.

The residents of Hayy al-Wadi that lies between Zouk Mosbeh and Zouk Mikhael urged the Civil Defense Department and rescuers to help them.

Capt. Michel Moutran, the founder of the TMC, told Voice of Lebanon radio (93.3) that the road closures due to heavy rains require preventive measures by the public works ministry and municipalities.

In a tweet, Moutran stressed that the authorities should work on cleaning drainage systems, activating the role of municipal police and linking the involved agencies with the TMC.

Such “things are difficult to achieve no?” he mocked.

Commuters deluged social media sites with pictures of submerged cars and flooded streets.

They took their rant on the government for failing to act.

An angry man said on Facebook that he was stuck in traffic for two hours.

He said Lebanon was like a “blocked toilet seat.”

But Minister of Public Works and Transport Ghazi Zoaiter told VDL (93.3) that he would investigate the issue.

Thursday's road chaos was reminiscent of the floods that blocked major roads in and around Beirut last December.

Bani Maarouf, this is a thread about floods, why do you insist in diverting the subject. Either you contribute or keep your silence, eft...

Thumb -phoenix1 10 April 2014, 18:06

bani Maarouf, how come you reply when I was referring to, Jeez, you are so predictable. I repeat my dear Ibin...whatever, the subject is about floods, and here you are not being honest just jabbing at people. By the way, the way you put it is as if inferring that Hezbollah has control of divinity, hence the deluge. Please, do accept my response, this forum will lose its very reason if we keep doing what you just did. I mean no bad to you, just a desire to keep it qualitative, do you catch my drift? With me respects to you.

I cannot deny that Lebanon has many wrongs, many ills and many problems, but what happened today is not a normal situation, it is more like a deluge rather than rains. The amount of water that fell between the early hours of the morning, (in fact going on till now as we write), cannot be underestimated. I am not exonerating anyone nor any department, but fair being fair, this deluge if in case it fell in a developed country could have caused the same adverse effect. I accept that criticism is due where it is due, but and I sympathize with the victims of such situations, but at least let us accept that climate change is affecting everyone these days, thus it is time that we react in doing preventative measures and preventative maintenance, best as we could.

@the1phoenix, I hope you get a chance to read this:

@FD, I am not a Republican nor Democrat. I am a conservative Libertarian. I think we should do what we can within reason to limit our carbon footprint but I do not believe in Global Warming.

Please note that FOX did not create the report, it simply informed its viewers about it. I know the Anti-FOX fervor is at an all time pitch and I expect that because it is the only conservative TV news outlet. The difference being is it reports all the news giving equal attention whether good or bad to both Republicans and as Democrats.

@FD, here is where the story came from:

http://news.heartland.org/newspaper-article/2014/04/08/comprehensive-report-documents-beneficial-impacts-global-warming

Also I wanted to mention to you that I do not assume blindly that just because someone or some group of people wrote something, that it is the truth. I am a person who believes the truth is neither side A or side B, it is almost always somewhere in the middle "A|B".

Thumb Bandoul 10 April 2014, 22:13

@FD, agreed, but is it different anywhere else in the world? The planet is run by power hungry, wealth seeking egomaniacs who could care less about you and me. We can speak out against and disagree with those who make our lives miserable but at the end of the day we pick the lesser of two evils...but changing things? I am blessed if I can just get thru the day with my sanity intact just juggling work vs home life and then pay the bills and the darn taxes which never seem to go to anything worthy in my humble opinion. Ask me how I am and I will tell you "I am better than most and not as good as some" and that's a blessing in itself.

If misfortune does not unite us, what will?

Fixing transport infrastructure in Lebanon: $40 million. Killing Syrians with Iranian weapons: $4 billion. Outrage at the irony: Priceless!
