Vatican Officials Warn Presidential Vacuum Would Harm Christians

Vatican officials have expressed fears that a possible vacuum in the presidency would harm the role of Christians in state institutions, al-Joumhouria daily reported Friday.

The newspaper quoted the officials as saying that the election of a new president was urgent amid the turmoil in Lebanon and the region.

They said any vacuum would affect power-sharing between Muslims and Christians and would harm the role of Christians in state institutions, mainly the presidency that is reserved for Maronites under the National Pact of 1943.

Under the agreement along confessional lines the prime minister should be a Sunni and the speaker a Shiite.

The danger of a presidential vacuum also lies on creating a precedence on the absence of a head of state, which would be explained as a diminishing role for Christians in the state, the officials said.

Such a scenario contradicts with the National Pact and the Constitution, they told al-Joumhouria.

The daily said last week that a delegation from the Vatican has been holding talks with Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi and Maronite political leaders in an attempt to bring to the helm of Baabda Palace the strongest and most popular Christian politician.

The delegation, which has been sent to Lebanon by Pope Francis, is moving back and forth between the papal embassy in Harissa, the seat of the Maronite church in Bkirki and the residences of the Maronite political leaders, it said.

The Vatican officials are also expected to hold meetings with the rest of the parliamentary blocs, al-Joumhouria quoted a Vatican source as saying.

Bani Maarouf, ya Ibnil Shoof, your wishful thinking will always be defeated, the Christian has a role, as has the Durzi, the Sunni, the Shiite, the Aalawi, the Boudhi. This is Lebanon, either we all live together in peace, or will perish in pieces. Now get back to your common senses, only yesterday you were beginning to sound mature, walaw, shoo sarlak in less than 24 hours again. Khalass ya beyk, either use intelligence of accept that you Lack Intelligence.

Shoof ya Bani Ibnil Shoof, let me relate some positions of Walid Beyk some years ago: Some years ago he was responding to us Christians if we did not join the political process where he said: "I am a Durzi, if the Sunnis come to lead this nation, me as a Durzi will have no problem fitting in, after all, I am a Muslim". Then, he said, reacting to the invasion of the Shoof by Hezbollah by saying, "If one party in Lebanon wants to dominate the rest of the parties, then all the parties in Lebanon, even those allied to Hezbollah will unite against Hezbollah". Then not long ago, Walid Beyk said in the presence of the Sheikhel 3akl and was caught off guard, "These Maronites are of the bad kind, howdel Mawarneh min jinsil 3atel". Which one do you toe ya Bani Maarouf, which one?

Again Cedre, there's nothing to digest from someone like you who keeps blowing hot air. yesterday I saw how almost all posters gave you another round of dry shaves, maybe you're the one having digestion problems I must say. Cedre, right now all I can tell you is this, learn from others how to remain calm and respectful, SF is one such great person, every line of his is wroth reading, even if at times I do not agree entirely with him, but an education he remains no matter what. I do learn from people like him, with you at least make the effort to keep things clean. I respected you so far and I desire to keep it that way. You can say whatever you wish of Bachir, it won't change anything except to impair your position with me. I honestly hope you will understand me, that's all.
