Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi washed the feet of 12 prisoners on Holy Thursday, calling for the quick trial of inmates who have been held without receiving sentences.

During his sermon at Roumieh prison, al-Rahi considered every person “innocent until proven guilty.”

The patriarch also called on the state to assume full responsibilities towards the prisoners.

Earlier, al-Rahi washed and kissed the feet of a dozen prisoners in Roumieh, Lebanon's largest prison, which has roughly 4,000 inmates.

The ceremony was held in the courtyard of the 200,000 square meter prison's block D.

The feet washing ritual commemorates Jesus' gesture of humility towards his apostles the night before he was crucified.

Top security and military officials attended the rite.

Isn't it in Christianity's doctrine to forgive.

Phil. It is a lesson of humility that the patriarch wants to give the people. It is about going to the lowest rungs of society (incarcerated prisonners) and showing humility.

If our politicians shed a bit from the tons of arrogance they have, and learn from the patriarch, that will be a plus.

Lets save the arguments for more worthwhile issues fellow posters. The Patriarch is entitled to this act, whether it is genuine or a publicity stunt only he knows. There will always be as many opinions as posters, but this particular act is of low priority to me (my opinion). Real humility lies in how we lead our lives every day not in any particular act. Wishing you all a good Easter.

Phil, bro, easy, take it easy, FT, James and everyone just feel offended by your remarks, personally I feel that you could have said it in a better way, knowing that you oppose Rahi's positions. Please bro, it's just a debate, just cool it, tomorrow is Good Friday, let's just uphold the good spirit.

"Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly" Matthew 6:1-4.

actually phil, this is what i thought at first : Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, not those of thugs and lowlives.
But then I remembered that he washed the feet of Judas knowing well that he's gonna betray him !

I am so proud of being Christian and thank you Patriarch for showing the real values of Christianity. It is about forgiveness, aboud openess to other, it is about tolerance. Patriarch Rahi showed our key values : humility, forgiveness, peace and openess. Revenge, wars, hatered, enemity, killings...all these are not linked to the real good values. Let Gid judge the people, who are we to judge ? We will all be judged, all. Happy Eastier to all

Seriously?!! Judah was among the disciples! What Judah did is 100 times worse than what these criminals did! Yet Jesus washed his feet!

Thumb zahle1 17 April 2014, 20:50

+1 I agree, I may not agree with the Patriarch's politics but this was a perfect demonstration of being Christ like.
