Maronite Institutions: Thwarting Presidential Elections Violates National Pact

Maronite institutions warned on Wednesday lawmakers against the failure to elect a new president and the consequent vacuum in the country's top post.

They said: “Obstructing presidential elections sessions violates the constitution and the national pact.”

They made their statement after holding a meeting chaired by Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi at Bkirki.

Moreover, they cautioned that vacuum in the presidency will “paralyze constitutional institutions.”

The Maronite institutions announced they will keep their meetings open to determine their positions on the presidential elections.

The institutions included the Maronite League headed by Samir Abi Lamaa, the Maronite Foundation in the World headed by Michel Edde, and the Maronite General Council chaired by Wadi al-Khazen.

Parliament has so far failed to elect a new president over differences between the March 8 and 14 alliances.

Most of the March 8 camp's MPs have boycotted four rounds of elections over their call for an agreement on a consensual president.

A fifth round of polls is scheduled to be held Thursday before the expiry of President Michel Suleiman's six-year tenure.

who is to blame for this other than the Maronites themselves. Thier enemies have an easy job. They just sit back and watch them quarrel like kids with gang colors.

The leaders of the other confessional groups have said, as have the Saudis that if the Maronites get together on a consensus Maronite candidate, that they will go to Parliament and elect him. Its this simple.
Geagea is declared but has said he will step aside for a more electable candidate.
Aoun is undeclared, but has his people boycott the electoral sessions until he is assured before hand that he will be elected. The assurance will not come and so he is stuck in a boycott loop which is frustrating the situation. One man's stubbornness has the whole country obstructed.
Its an outrage.

I think we all owe Naharnet a big debt of gratitude for not telling us what the national pact is. But this very phrase could be inflammatory and offensive. Why not just call it "the 'n' word"?
