FPM to Challenge Extension of Parliament Term, Consider it Worsens Political Impasse

The Free Patriotic Movement vowed to challenged the extension of the parliament's term, deeming it as an attempt to strengthen the de facto situation in the country.

FPM circles said in comments published in al-Joumhouria newspaper on Tuesday that the party rejects the extension of the legislature's tenure and is demanding the political foes to carry out timely elections.

“The FPM will challenge the extension if it happened,” the sources said.

The sources expressed belief that the staging of elections would “break the political standstill.”

Meanwhile, An Nahar newspaper reported that the March 8 and 14 Christians, who are divided over the presidential polls, reject the extension of the parliament's term.

Lebanon will enter on August 20 a deadline to agree on a new electoral law ahead of the elections.

Zahle MP Nicolas Fattoush proposed last week a draft-law for extending parliament's term by more than two years, citing security reasons.

Last year, the parliament extended its mandate to November 2014 for the same reasons and over a disagreement over a new electoral law.

But this year, the crisis widened after the Baabda Palace was vacated over the failure to elect a president.

There are fears that the failure to hold the parliamentary elections would lead to a greater vacuum.

H.K.

G.K.

Luckily for us FPM doesn't get to choose which state authority gets to function or which they can create vacuum in. Or do they?

My favourite FPM line. Demanding the political foes to carry out timely elections. Are they referring to the presidential elections??

They play the victim card oh so well don't they.

Thumb ex-fpm 19 August 2014, 09:36

hypocrites indeed. They claim they reject extension of parliament's term but don't reject the vacuum in the seat of the presidency.

It's only a matter of selective stupidity they cause vacuum and chaos then complain about the consequences like the spoiled little girls they are.

Much ado about nothing methinks, the FPM, Kataeb, LF, the rest of March 8 and 14 Christians, Amal are against the extension of the parliament's term, that's more than enough voting Neh to defeat the notion.

motion not notion, sorry.

Thumb beiruti 19 August 2014, 16:33

To challenge it, they have to at least show up at Parliament. And if they show up, then they are compelled by the constitution to act as an electoral body and VOTE for a PRESIDENT

Sure thing. But then let Aoun run for elections in Arsal. Let's see how he likes the security situation then.

And who is running the country at gunpoint? Yalla go worship your Lord and Savior Saint Aoun and while you are at it please pray to him to immediately demand from his allies bringing back all the Lebanese prisoners in Syrians jails. He is the almighty after all and he should be able to perform this miracle no?
