Hariri Backing Civil State to Confront Extremism

Al-Mustaqbal Movement leader ex-PM Saad Hariri is backing the formation of a civil state over his rejection of extremism, al-Mustaqbal officials said.

The officials told pan-Arab daily al-Hayat published on Monday that Hariri brought up the issue during his meetings with al-Mustaqbal's politburo and the movement's bloc.

He also made many references to it during recent speeches and stressed in a recent TV interview that he backed civil marriage.

Al-Hayat quoted an al-Mustaqbal official as saying that Hariri's recent stances could be interpreted as a future call for separating religion from the state.

The official revealed that the former PM called for the formation of a team from the movement to come up with a blueprint on a vision on the civil state.

He hoped the document to be finalized in the coming weeks.

What about the extremist supporters he used in 2008 during the Halba massacre?
