Saniora Says Aoun Has No Chances of Reaching Baabda

Al-Mustaqal Movement parliamentary bloc leader MP Fouad Saniora stressed on Saturday that Free Patriotic Movement chief MP Michel Aoun has no chances of reaching the presidential palace in Baabda.

“The hijacked presidency is ruining the country's reputation,” Saniora's visitors quoted him as saying in comments published in As Safir newspaper.

He pointed out that the presidential vacuum is worsening the situation in the country.

“We are definitely seeking the election of a strong president, who has leadership skills and could unite the Lebanese and not increase the gap between them,” Saniora reportedly said.

He accused Hizbullah of impeding the polls over its insistence to press the election of Aoun.

“It is clear that Aoun has no chance of reaching the presidency... he has been informed... if he still has hope then it's his problem,” Saniora pointed out.

Asked about an alleged deal that guarantees the appointment of Aoun's son-in-law Commando Regiment chief Brig. Gen. Chamel Roukoz as army chief on the condition of his withdrawal from the presidential run, Saniora said: “There's no such agreement... we could reach a settlement but we will not back down.”

Media reports had said that Aoun's main objective is to receive political consensus on the appointment of Roukoz as army chief as part of a package for the appointment of other top security officers.

Roukoz's tenure ends in October while the term of army commander Gen. Jean Qahwaji expires at the end of September.

Despite the reports about his insistence to have his son-in-law as army chief, Aoun denied that he had made such a proposal.

The military posts in Lebanon are suffering as the result of the months-long presidential vacuum in light of the parliament's failure to elect a successor for Michel Suleiman whose tenure ended in May. The vacuum also threatens the Internal Security Forces as chief Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Basbous is set to retire in June.

Despite the reports about his insistence to have his son-in-law as army chief, Aoun denied that he had made such a proposal.

Aoun also denies he is running for the presidency. He denies everything. He denied Michel Smaha was transporting explosives from Syria too.

Aoun the claoun is already tired and deflated, this is apart of his serious mental instability and debility, Sayed Hassan, Iran and Syria don't love this insane man, they are just exploiting his phenomenal greed and his legendary incapacity to calculate properly. Al Capoun the claoun's health will only get even worse because of this latest declaration. Yalla may his day come soon.

FT, I take your views in good faith of Siniora, but then again your best attempts at extrapolation fall well short of covering a story in its entirety. You haven't mentioned the massive thefts of Lebanon's treasury through dubious and illegal means by Hezbollah, its imposition of the workings of a state within the state, the illegal collection of revenues, the illegal building of infrastructure and superstructures here and there, the invitation of foreigners bringing their conflicts to us, thanks and courtesy of that same Hezbollah. For as long as you focus on one side of the coin only, then literally speaking most won't take you much in good faith as I do masalan.

With all due respect Mr. Prime minister, you wish to see Christians mad3oussin forever? Let Aoun govern, and let us see what comes out of it. Then let us snap out of it wou nokhlass.

The Caporal believes he is the greatest man ever born and cannot accept how "small generals " (Chehab, Lahood, Sleiman) became presidents and he the NapoleAoun cannot be president !!!
He truly and really is a megalomaniac and a mentally ill person.
I am for a president who is honest, patriot and competent, such as Neemat Frem, Ziad Baroud, Samir Frangieh...when all Christians unite behind the president, he will then be automatically a STRONG PRESIDENT.
By the way, the ones who are working on destroying the Christians are those who are aiming for an Islamic Republic.

Flamethrower, why didn't your hezb and Aoun prosecute Saniora for all his alleged crimes when they had the Aoun-HA government for more than 2 years? That would have been the perfect time.... huh?

Summary of Lebanese politics: blackmail.

So, if Aoun and Geagea withdraw their candidacy, why can't they find a decent president?

Thumb justin 25 April 2015, 18:44

no, it was the Portuguese Ambassador.

Thumb Mystic 25 April 2015, 21:49

They can dream on, Gen. Aoun has a better chance than all of M14s candidates.

Thumb nickjames 25 April 2015, 22:46

Mystic, your comments are getting even more pathetic by the day. "General" Michel Aoun had his chance to rule Lebanon 27 years ago, and he fled like a pansy with the millions he stole from the treasury. A man he left his men to die and family to get raped by your Syrian soldiers will not become the president (here is where you wanna deviate the conversation to "my idol" Geagea). All of these political parties should be outlawed, and all of the politicians (except for those who were too young to be involved in any war) should be imprisoned.

But of course, this is Lebanon. The MPs are za3ran, the ministries they control are fronts for their corrupt businesses, and their parties are mafias that are stabbing the Lebanese in the face. Wake up and stop supporting these fanatic lunatics who have destroyed the country.
