Mustaqbal Dismisses 'Christian Poll' Idea as Attempt to 'Invent New Norms'

Al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc on Tuesday reiterated its call for the speedy election of a new president, warning against any attempt to “invent new legal norms” in this regard.

“The priority remains the speedy election of a president, which must be the top priority in this critical period that Lebanon and the region are going through,” said the bloc in a statement issued after its weekly meeting.

“It is necessary to abide by the Constitution and refrain from inventing new legal norms that would obstruct the election of a new president,” it added.

As a suggestion to resolve the presidential crisis, Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun has recently proposed organizing a survey to determine which Christian party or parties are the most influential in the country. His idea has garnered the support of Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea and Marada Movement chief Suleiman Franjieh amid reservations by the Kataeb Party.

But Mustaqbal stressed Tuesday that efforts must be exerted to elect a president through a parliamentary vote, describing it as “the only constitutional mechanism.”

The bloc also urged adherence to “Article 27 of the Constitution,” saying it “makes every MP a representative of the entire nation” and “stipulates that Lebanese lawmakers should not be confined by any restrictions or conditions as they perform their duties.”

Aoun's Change and Reform bloc had noted earlier in the day that the suggested survey would “mark a positive precedent in Lebanon and serve as a reminder that the people exist.”

“The disregard of the people has led us to the situation that we are in now,” Change and Reform said.

Commenting on Prime Minister Tammam Salam's call for a Thursday cabinet session, Mustaqbal voiced support for his move, pointing out that it comes after “premeditated obstruction that was practiced by several political parties.”

It accused those parties of “harming the interests of Lebanese citizens and subjecting them to futile adventures over personal and family interests.”

Mustaqbal knows the matter well, this is why I said previously, let us go along caporal Aoun's ideas, when the caporal finds himself licking the floor and licking his wounds, then he will have no one to blame but his narrow mind, utter greed and alter ego. I guess Aoun spends long night pondering how he could get that seat, when that seat has four legs that run a lot faster than him, 3an jad, poor Aoun.

Phoenix

Your blind hatred for General Aoun has succumbed you to the lowest level of political bankruptcy. Even if all Christian parties have agreed to a somewhat solution, you still would rather deny and run after the party that has stolen Christian rights in the country and continue to do so today.

This survey will once gain prove that Aoun is the true leader of the Christians in Lebanon.

Watch and see

Sheikh Bashir must be turning in his grave with fake guys like you using his picture and hiding behind his legacy to further a Christian destructive agenda and propaganda.

@constantine, the problem with Yellows like you, is that you do not make much efforts to hide your character, even when using another alias. You're right, I do hate Aoun and for a multitude of reasons, none of which are blind. Sadly for you, you've trampolined straight to that silly slogan verbalization of your yellows, to tell us that Aoun is the true leader of Christians, ya 3ayne 3aleyk wou 3ala ashkelak. You tell us why it is that these days his supporters can now be counted into the few cars and buses that go and visit him. Then, when referring to Bashir in his grave, how can a soul turn in a grave ya habileh? But for me to continue addressing would be a waste of time, since your job is that of a cemetery sentinel. Your work seems to be cut out for you, mou?

After today, we should all as Lebanese promise ourselves that other than the legal Lebanese Army and other than the Legal Lebanese security forces, we should no longer accept any armed presence be it foreign or illegal Lebanese... BASHIR GEMAYEL

If we, as a Christian sect in this east, weren't different than others and didn't have a country, it doesn't have to be a christian country, but be a country truly for chrisitans in which we can live with our heads held high.BASHIR GEMAYEL
