'Animals Lebanon' Drafts Law to Protect Animals

In cooperation with government bodies and international organizations, “Animals Lebanon”, an NGO that works to protect animals, has drafted comprehensive legislation for the protection and welfare of animals.

This legislation was drafted in collaboration with international experts after reviewing the current status of animal welfare in Lebanon, existing national legislation, legislation of countries in the region, international conventions, and best practices throughout the world.

Animals Lebanon formally presented its draft legislation to Agriculture Minister Hussein Hajj Hassan and the Parliamentarians at the launching conference.

The draft was reviewed by over 20 international organizations including the World Health Organization, and the campaign is being carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture.

“The draft would move Lebanon into being more compliant with the obligations of the World Animal Health Organization and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, as well as specifically addressing local issues such as stray animal control”, Animals Lebanon said in an email.

Animals Lebanon is now working to secure 25,000 signatures in support of this law and meeting individually with Parliamentarians, while cooperating with the Ministry of Agriculture to see the draft proceed as quickly as possible.

Animals Lebanon (founded in 2008) is an NGO that works to protect animals through legislation, education, campaign and rescues.

As one of the most effective organizations in the Middle East, Animals Lebanon has rescued thousands of animals while closing down unregulated zoos, campaigning against abusive circuses and investigating the smuggling of endangered species.

On November 24, Animals Lebanon held a press conference under the patronage of the minister of agriculture at the Parliament building.

“Animals Abuse has been going on for so long now and we are taking the first steps to stop it and re-enforce the law that was present before the time Lebanon got its independence,” the email added.
