One Person Arrested for Smuggling Arms to Free Syrian Army

Military Examining Magistrate Imad al-Zain issued an arrest warrant on Thursday against a Lebanese national on charges of smuggling weapons to the Free Syrian Army, reported the National News Agency.

It said that Hussein A. was arrested after attempting to smuggle the arms through the border region of al-Qaa in the Bekaa.

Thousands of Syrians have fled to Lebanon since a revolt against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad broke out in March last year.

Syria has mined several regions along the porous border to prevent the smuggling of weapons and infiltration of rebel fighters, activists say.

Army Commander General Jean Qahwaji visited the border area in northern and eastern Lebanon on Wednesday to review the troops and evaluate the situation on the ground.

His office said Qahwaji discussed "measures taken to secure the border and protect residents."

Shortly after his visit, Syrian troops fired rocket propelled grenades into northern Lebanon during the night, sparking panic among the local population, a security official and residents said on Thursday.

The security official said heavy machinegun fire followed by shelling erupted at around 9:00 pm (1900 GMT) from the Syrian side of the border, near the Lebanese village of Muqaybleh, prompting some residents to flee.

There were no reports of casualties.

"The Syrian troops initially fired flares and then machineguns and rocket propelled grenades," the official, who requested anonymity, told AFP.

He said at least two rockets fell inside Lebanese territory.

A local official in Muqaybleh said a number of fearful residents fled the village overnight.

"People were scared," he said, adding that no one was injured and no houses were hit.

Lebanese media also reported shelling near al-Qaa.

A local official in al-Qaa told AFP that machinegun fire was heard overnight across the border but that no shells fell inside Lebanese territory.

At least three people have been killed since October and several have been wounded when Syrian troops staging incursions into Lebanon opened fire on border villages.

Lebanon and Syria share a 330-kilometer (205-mile) border but have yet to agree on official demarcation.

The whole world was asking the lebanese government to stop the smuggling of arms to hezbollah and others since 2006 and the government was unable to catch one smuggled shipment inward under the pretense of the impossibility to seal the borders. It seems possible now!

Hezbollah's weapons were legalized by the 5 rafic hariri governments (when he gave the keys to beirut to ghazi kanaan), they were also legalised by the 2 saniora governments and saad hariri's government and miqati's current one.

Until israel stops violating our nation and takes back the palestinians as per UN Resolution 194, the resistance will not end and your words are those of a traitor and zionist collaborator.

Thumb benzona 22 March 2012, 19:21

Mon Cher ami luxembourgeois: don't get it wrong, legalized NEVER, tolerated, yes definitely. But our slain martyr and prime minister was too lenient. It cost him his life and Lebanon lost sooooo much.

The weapons brought in for Hizballah are used to defend the country against Israel (does M14 still considers Israel as the enemy?)The weapons taken out of the country are used to arm the Salafis in Syria, so there is really no room to compare. NB: also no one was ever caught for smuggling weapons neither to Harriri and co (remember during the famous May7 both parties had weapons but Hizballah used his better) nor to LF or PSP so the unfortunate situation is found all over the country

Thumb jabalamel 23 March 2012, 16:11

no they don't, they are paid by zionists.

Ya Keserweneh, where do you live, on Saturn? The iranian Hezbollahi weapons were used against the true Lebanese citizens. The TNT was used to blow out our favorite prime minister, the rockets and other bullets against everyone that wasn't Shia on May 7. So.... Fee2 min Hal wahim and return to us when you do. Moreover, in this case my dear fellow Lebanese, the weapons are leaving our country which is positive, it means less weapons on our not so holy soil.

Thumb kesrweneh 22 March 2012, 20:53

ok well 1st of all he's not my favorite PM (for about 60billion reasons) but god rest his soul anyway dead people deserves respect regardless of our opinion.2nd, May 7 was a war between Harriri armed men and Hizbullah, Hizbullah won good for them, but this doesn't make Harriris party victims only people who lost a war.3rd now is the time for everyone to gather around FPM, for we have to defend our country against the salafi invasion that is spreading in the arab world, while some M14 are attacking the 3 most important pilars of our country: the Army, the Church and the majority, so sorry can't leave now but ur more then welcome to join my friend:)

Thumb jcamerican 23 March 2012, 17:50

This is my point exactly. If they wanted Lebanon, why didn't they do it that day. I guess they were not in the mood. Or it was not scheduled for that day. I guess they screwed themselves, because Bashar regime will fall by M14 predictions and the rest of the world, then they will attack Hizballah and disarm them, because they are weak without Bashar.

What better glory to the Syrian people will come at the hands of such a "free Syrian army" that has already amassed a long record of monstrous human rights violations. Democracy? My left foot. No wonder the Syrian people are stuck with the evil that they know.

Thumb benzona 22 March 2012, 19:15

Weapons in everyone's hands or nobody's? I go for nobody except our national army. Because The other options sounds just too familiar and reminds me of the civil war. However, with hizballa's behaviour it someone demonstrates that this war was never really over for them.

Thumb kesrweneh 22 March 2012, 20:56

I agree with Benzona 100% and it's time for all Lebanese to sit on a round table with no conditions and come up with a good defense strategy to protect Lebanon from Israel and give peace of mind to M14 parties. i think what FPM and Hizbullah created in 2005 is an excellent basis to start from, and for those with better ideas let them come forward
