Suleiman Calls for Unity among Petroleum Authority Members to Serve the Nation

President Michel Suleiman congratulated on Thursday the newly-appointed members of the Petroleum Authority and urged for unity in their work plan.

Energy Minister Jebran Bassil and the authority's six members visited Suleiman in Baabda palace to brief him on their work on decrees that regulate the stage of issuing tenders for oil exploration.

“Suleiman congratulated the authority, stressing the importance of its unity and its unified work,” said a statement issued by his office.

The president hoped that they would put the country's interest before any other interest, it said.

The Authority visited as well Speaker Nabih Berri who said it “represents hope for Lebanon and the next generations economically and at the level of sustainable development.”

The formation of the Petroleum Authority in November was the first major step in future oil exploration since parliament passed a law last year setting the country's maritime boundary and Exclusive Economic Zone.

The members of the authority that has the power to negotiate with international oil companies and issue licenses for the winning firms are Nasser Hteit, Walid Nasser, Wissam al-Zahabi, Assem Abu Ibrahim, Wissam Shbat and Gaby Daaboul.

The head of the committee will be rotated each year between the six members to appease the major factions in the country.

Lebanon has been slow to exploit its maritime resources compared with other eastern Mediterranean countries. Israel, Cyprus and Turkey are all much more advanced in drilling for oil and gas.

The country has submitted to the United Nations a maritime map that conflicts significantly with one proposed by Israel.

The disputed zone consists of about 854 square kilometers (330 square miles), and suspected energy reserves there could generate billions of dollars.

Two companies working with the Lebanese authorities that specialize in three-dimensional exploration have already surveyed around half the EEZ, Bassil said in September.

They found a large number of gas reservoirs all along the coast.

The area off the southern coast alone contains 12 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, the minister said.

This is an issue of extreme importance to Lebanon's future. If these ministers refuse to cooperate with each other they should be replaced until a consenus can be achieved. Anything less is treason. Even Harari and Gaegae should urge cooperation in all the people of Lebanon's intersts.

I hope they move quickly. if we find natural resources in Lebanon, and since we already have a legendary commercial spirit, we will soon be a very wealthy nation. Spread some of this wealth to our countrymen and all the root causes of fundamentalism will disappear. Lebanon will become a rich stable oil nation.... 3ichtom wa 3acha lobnan.

but who will it benefit to? i m afraid they ll let crumbs for the lebanese people while filling their bank accounts! see nigeria, where people don t even benefit from their wealth! and in lebanon where all politicians are rotten to the spine, they will just use that money for their own political interests! let us just wait and see

Thumb lebanon_first 20 December 2012, 18:25

politicians will steal. they always do. Dont kings do so in Kuwait, Saudi and UAE? And they do so within their stupid retard laws, while here stealing would be theoretically against the law.
This being said, whatever you say, 50% of lebanon's economy is clean. 50% is corrupt. If we get 50% of the wealth, it will be enough. we dont need so much.

Missing peace 20 December 2012, 21:04

well just see how the emiratis profit from the oil even if the kings steal money! they re all wealthy and hire foreigners to work for them! 80% of emirati population are foreigners!
will lebanon be able to do the same? that s utopia!

Lebanon needs new blood, new politicians with clean hands before we start drilling, otherwise the people won't see most of it.
The arms must be unified under the state also before drilling.

I hope they know that they are accountable to the Lebanese people before they are accountable to their respective parties or affiliations.

I'd like to know what sort of transparency in reporting have they signed-up for? How will be sure that the management of this important project will be done ethically, efficiently and professionally?
