Report: Suleiman Seeking Alternative Proposals to Persuade Parties to Return to Dialogue

President Michel Suleiman has voiced his disappointment with the failure of his initiatives that are aimed at persuading the various rival political parties to return to the national dialogue, reported the pan-Arab daily al-Hayat on Sunday.

It quoted his visitors as saying that he will likely propose alternate initiatives to persuade factions to return to the all-party talks.

They said that he is seeking to discuss the spread of arms in Lebanon, a defense strategy for the country, and the electoral law, as well as the ties between the pro- and anti-government factions.

“Communication between the Lebanese should not be severed,” he was quoted as saying.

“This assertion is pushing him to propose alternative initiatives,” explained Suleiman's visitors.

The next dialogue session is set for January 7, but the participation of all of its members is not guaranteed.

The March 14-led opposition announced its boycott of the dialogue and government-related activities in light of the assassination of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau head Brigadier General Wissam al-Hasan on October 19.

He was killed in a massive car bomb in Beirut's Ashrafiyeh district.

The opposition and Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat accused the Syrian regime of being behind the crime.

The opposition has demanded the resignation of the government in wake of the murder, blaming the cabinet of covering up for the criminals.

to restart the dialogue sessions in baabda, the president with all due respect must do the following:

1- reassure the 14th of march group that they won’t be targeted with political assassinations anymore in the future, by providing and funding needed urgent security measures for their leaders on the hit lists and encourage those outside the country to come back.

2- in the event the lebanese government is unwilling or unable to follow through the president's directives two options would come to mind:

a- the president can request foreign assistance in securing the lives of m14 leaders from the united nations or from an international private or governmental entity acceptable by m14 leaders.

b- if the clause a above is out of question, the 14th of march group must be given the right to arm themselves as they please until they feel comfortable enough to assume the responsibility for their own personal protection and safety; that should reestablish some kind of balance of military powers between the 8th and 14th of march groups.

3- put pressure on the judiciary system from now on and unlike before to start delivering swift and speedy trials for political assassinations with stern and public sentences to those convicted.

4- provide political and financial incentives for hizballah to surrender their weapons, at first their heavy ones, to the lebanese authorities and clarity to them the national and serious repercussions of their refusal to budge by invoking the clause in paragraph 2-b among others and letting them know that business as usual is no longer acceptable and it is time for them to adopt this historical change expected by the majority of the people in lebanon.

Of course blame the murders of M14 on the IDF, the green creatures from Mars, the tribes in the Amazon forests, etc... But never on the Syrian junta and their terror gangs in Lebanon... Go and crawl under a rock pal...

“Communication between the Lebanese should not be severed,” ~ Suleiman

The communications haven't been severed, March 14 has been engaged in a divisive and libelous campaign that I am sure the whole country is aware of ...

Umm--why don't you ask M8 why all these M14 political figures have been either been assassinated or targeted for assassination? Next ask yourself, what does HA want with the national dialogue session--they will try to impose their will and if asked to do anything, they will balk.

Talking to HA now or not talking to them will yield the same result: NOTHING. Until they concede something or offer something constructive, the talks will not be helpful or yield anything fruitful.

"they create the problem and then come and cry about it ! ""

you summed up all what M8 is about....bravo!
