Report: Saniora Urged Suleiman to Control Border with Syria
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةAl-Mustaqbal bloc leader Fouad Saniora has informed President Michel Suleiman that the March 14 opposition alliance is preparing a study on ways to protect the border with Syria.
Sources close to Saniora said the MP stressed to Suleiman that “the security situation on the border with Syria requires urgent action to control it by deploying the army” to avoid the spread of the security tension to other areas.
The measures should include the end of arms smuggling and the infiltration of fighters across the border, he reportedly said.
U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon warned in a report to the Security Council on Wednesday that Lebanese leaders must adhere to their declared neutrality on the Syrian civil war.
"The reported involvement of certain Lebanese elements in the conflict in Syria is contrary to Lebanon's policy of disassociation," he said.
Reports have emerged that Hizbullah members have been aiding the Syrian regime in its fighting with the rebel Free Syrian Army, and fighters opposing Syrian President Bashar Assad have crossed to the neighboring country to assist the rebels.
Saniora's sources also told An Nahar that the Mustaqbal bloc chief discussed with Suleiman the controversial electoral draft-law.
Al-Mustaqbal is open to discussions on any proposal in an attempt to hold the elections on time, they said.
A statement issued by Baabda Palace said Wednesday that Suleiman discussed with Saniora ongoing efforts to reach an agreement on a modern law that provides fair representation in line with the Constitution and the National Pact.
