Miqati Says Security Situation 'Acceptable', Quick Fixes in Sidon Lead to Unforeseen Consequences
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةPrime Minister Najib Miqati warned on Thursday against any “quick fix” of the recent developments in the southern city of Sidon, noting that the security situation in Lebanon “is still acceptable”.
"Quick fixes can lead to unforeseen consequences,” Miqati expressed during a meeting with a delegation of the Editors' Syndicate at the Grand Serail.
He added: “The army is taking care of the situation, although a political approach can be the solution”.
"A national dialogue session is still our first choice for going over all conflicts in the country”.
The premier said the security situation in the country is “still acceptable”, despite Syria's ongoing conflict: “For the past two years, we have focused our efforts on safeguarding Lebanon from the repercussions of the Syrian turmoil”.
Separately, PM Miqati commented on the Higher Islamic Councils' elections, stating that he is “keen on preserving the institution's unity”.
"We have urged Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Qabbani to participate in the talks before March 16, and any decision we take will be built upon what happens from now until then”.
The dispute over the HIC elections deepened amid increasing tension between Miqati and Mufti Qabbani.
LBCI reported that the Mufti filed on Thursday a lawsuit against anyone found suspicious of “forging” the extension of the Higher Islamic Council's term.
His move came a day after Miqati and former premiers gave him until Saturday to call on the HIC to convene, warning Qabbani of failing to comply.
The Mufti is refusing to hold any meetings at Dar al-Fatwa for considering that the HIC's term has expired.
