Cabinet Formation Comes to Standstill over March 8 Conditions

The new cabinet is not likely to witness light before mid-May over the insistence of Shiite leaderships to name the sect's ministers in addition to another request for veto power by the Hizbullah-led March 8 alliance, An Nahar newspaper reported on Wednesday.

According to An Nahar, the coalition has conditioned a 45 percent of seats in the government similar to its weight in parliament and has rejected the rotation of portfolios that Premier-designate Tammam Salam had suggested.

Informed sources also told al-Joumhouria daily that the formation of the cabinet had “gone back to square one” over the March 8 demands.

They said a meeting was held between Salam and Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat in al-Msaitbeh on Sunday night to discuss the deadlock. The meeting was attended by caretaker Social Affairs Minister Wael Abu Faour.

Another unannounced meeting was held by Salam and Hussein Khalil, the political aide of the Hizbullah chief, and Speaker Nabih Berri's aide caretaker Minister Ali Hassan Khalil.

But the talks did not resolve the crisis.

An Nahar daily quoted Baabda palace sources as saying that Salam also visited President Michel Suleiman on Monday to assess the cabinet formation process.

Salam has rejected giving the blocking third to any party, saying it would paralyze the government.

Big LOL.
I am actually skipping reading Naharnet articles now and going straight to the Comments section looking for Flamethrower's thoughts.

A touch of comedy in this otherwise gloomy world of lebanese news reporting.

Keep it up mate. You are getting funnier by the day

yes the 7/24 electricity and a kidnapping a day cabinet really shows how well M8 governs, but even those results are nothing compared to their obstructionist qualities. That's their thing--obstruct, don't do.

Missing samiam 08 May 2013, 20:39

you really want to bring that up--I was actually talking about the GOVERNMENT, but you choosing to nitpick and somehow overlookng HA's transgressions, like not turning in WANTED suspects on charges, preventing the authorities from going into areas without their 'permission', stealing electricity and land, and not to forget the kidnapping, drug running, and money laundering.

As for the GOVERNMENT, can you tell me why someone would want a blocking third unless they wanted to OBSTRUCT. They act like a spoiled kid with severe temper tantrums if things don't go their way.

At least the economy was growing at a rate of 7%. Now the economy is stalling or in recession and we still have no more electricity, mobile network is poor and Internet speed has increased 2 or four times when every where else in the world it has increased 100 times.

Missing peace 08 May 2013, 21:37

FT just read the statistics of the economic growth in lebanon before your M8 incompetents came into power, then come talking instead of spitting out your OTV propaganda...

Missing lebcan 08 May 2013, 11:50

OK FT if the M14 Government (paralyzed many times by the M8 veto and/or tire burning, murdering M14ers, etc 2005-2010) was really as bad as you say, marking them on a scale of 1 out of 10 then Sir I will say with confidence that the M8 Lying Murdering Steeling (Yes Really!!!) Hypocrites deserve a Minus10/10. WOW you are a reeeee!

M14 never asked for a Veto!!! Why the Hell does M8ers want a Veto... Because its their Way or the Highway... as they have much control Now. A Veto will still give them a powerful trump card even if they lose the elections. Nothing will happen or move forward as the newly elected government would like to move forward, and when that happens like a blind sheep, you FT would go on blaming the M14ers of doing NOTHING!!! BUT IT'S THE M8 Thugs that are using their VETO??? VETO MEANS BLOCKING VETO MEANS NOTHING WILL HAPPEN.

Missing lebcan 08 May 2013, 13:43

OOOOOOkay FT, SURE MAN ... what ever you say. You know it all...

Missing samiam 08 May 2013, 20:40

you like saying the word corrupt, but I don't think you know what it means. and I KNOW you don't want to prevent from going on (look at the legislation, or lack of it)--it seems like you want your chance too.

Missing peace 08 May 2013, 21:42

"veto also means preventing the other from destroying the country." the excuse of a desperate FPMer.... always trying to find solutions to block the country to preserve their power and privileges....tfeh

Irony one the side, every single word you say is a joke....

But unlike others, I do enjoy reading you in the same way that I enjoy seeing Seinfeld or Bill Mahr profess about absurdity.

Missing allouchi 08 May 2013, 14:25

The only reason the M8 camp DARES demand a veto power is because of their illegal weapons period...shame on them...

Thumb lebanon_first 08 May 2013, 17:11

Bad translating. Naharnet doing misinformation again. Read the issue about 45% in english, then in arabic, and find the differences.

Missing peace 08 May 2013, 21:40

lol, who is still blocking the gvt formation? M8 as usual.... waiting to see how it ll turn out in syria .... they do not want any elections to take place soon so they are stalling the country those idiots... they do not care about people s welfare just care about their own selfish interests.....
