Rowhani: We're against Foreign Intervention in Syria, Govt. Must Stay till 2014

Hassan Rowhani Monday warned against foreign intervention in Syria, insisting that the strife-torn country's crisis should be resolved by its own people, in his first press conference since being elected Iran's new president.

"The Syrian crisis must be resolved by the people of Syria. We are against terrorism, civil war, and foreign intervention. Hopefully, with the help of all countries of the region and the world, peace and calm will return to Syria," the cleric said.

"The Syrian crisis must be resolved by a vote by Syrians. We are concerned by the civil war and foreign interference. The government (of President Bashar Assad) must be respected by other countries until the next (2014 presidential) elections and then it is up to the people to decide."

Rowhani was on Saturday declared winner of Iran's presidential election, ending an eight year conservative grip on the Islamic republic's administration under Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

josh really has a sexual issue....

Missing milad 17 June 2013, 21:28

Josh bustany, is that why the assad soldiers raped every women they wanted in lebanon during the years of occupation? Because the baath brought sexual peace to them? And what exactly does that mean? How did the baath bring sexual peace? Even the US who is one of the most free countries in the world coule achieve that, its rape statistics is sky high.

Missing helicopter 17 June 2013, 23:48

Back then you were doing your rapes in Lebanon (so Syrians were spared). You raped a whole country (my country) - get lost.

Missing peace 18 June 2013, 01:10

Josh: your baath culture:
"In March of this year, the United Nations human rights chief, Navi Pillay, stated in an interview that security forces in Syria are systematically detaining and torturing children with the approval or complicity of President Bashar Assad. “They’ve gone for the children, for whatever purpose, in large numbers, hundreds detained and tortured,” she said. “It’s just horrendous, children shot in the knees, held together with adults, in really inhumane conditions, denied medical treatment for their injuries, either held as hostages, or held as sources of information” (BBC).The statement by Pillay came following a report the previous month which stated that there were at least 400 child deaths this year alone — some as young as 10 being held in solitary confinement. Many families also reported levels of systematic rape against young girls and women both in Syria and refugee camps in bordering countries such as Iraq."

this enturbaned boy forgets that his men are foreigners in Syria. Dans quel monde vit-on?

Thumb geha 17 June 2013, 17:23

this new president will not be allowed to do anything unfortunately, but his election shows clearly the internal Iranian discontent about the squandering of iran richness on hizbushaitan and Syria. and that's it.
for us in Lebanon I foresee intense fighting in Tripoli and toppling of jabal Mohsen once and for all, as well as disturbances across the bekaa and saida, which might be followed by major disturbances in Beirut.
the state of m8 after the delivery of anti tank and SA missiles to the FSA is enough indication that they are loosing it, especially after the threat of bashar assad to Europe.

who expected anything else?

Default-user-icon trueself (Guest) 17 June 2013, 19:02

At least he's clear in stating that Iran is intent on keeping its forces in Syria and in leaving Huzbullah involved in full force. I was not expecting anything different. But, if he thinks he will have a good relationship with Saudi Arabia while insisting on keeping his forces in Syria, he's disillusioned and certainly his PHD which he purported he has is certainly from an unknown God knows where it is. i'd rather not hear from him anymore because this man is a carbon copy of his predecessor. Moreover, Syria will be liverated because its people want so and Iran will ultimately loose Lebanon, Syria and Iraq.

To this idiot comment, why is his regime has been interfering in Lebanon'affairs by supplying money and arms to a non Government without any respect? is it a retaliation measure against KSA or the road to Palestine is via South Lebanon but not thru the Golan Heights.
