President Michel Suleiman, Speaker Nabih Berri, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati and Premier-designate Tammam Salam condemned on Tuesday the blast that rocked the Bir al-Abed neighborhood in Beirut's southern suburbs, urging the Lebanese people to end their disputes.

Suleiman said in a statement: “The explosion should prompt officials to end their differences, return to dialogue, and commit to the Baabda Declaration.”

“The security of the people must be respected regardless of how great the political disputes get,” he remarked.

He demanded that the security and judicial agencies intensify their efforts to uncover the perpetrators, “who are planting fear and terror among the people.”

For his part, Berri remarked that the attack is aimed at dividing the Lebanese people, urging them to exercise vigilance to thwart the criminals' plans.

Earlier, Miqati said in a statement: “The blast demonstrates that the criminals are bent on following through with their plan to destabilize Lebanon without distinguishing between one area and another.”

The blast demands that the Lebanese end their differences in order to end the political and security deadlock, he added.

“They should rise above petty disputes to reach an understanding that would ensure that Lebanon end its crisis,” Miqati stressed, while saying that they should make concessions for the sake of the country.

Salam later condemned the attack, saying that it is aimed at destabilizing Lebanon and the security of its people.

He called for exercising the “highest degrees of vigilance and national solidarity to thwart attempts to tamper with Lebanon's security, regardless of which side is behind them.”

“Today's ugly crime is part of a series of attacks aimed at targeting the country's security and dragging the people towards strife,” he noted.

“It is our duty as political leaders to improve our performance in order to thwart the enemies of our nation from achieving their goals, fortify our internal scene, and bolster our state institutions,” Salam said.

He called for supporting the security authorities, hoping that they would succeed in uncovering the criminals.

A blast rocked the Bir al-Abed neighborhood on Tuesday morning.

Initial reports said that at least 50 people were wounded in the explosion that was caused by a booby-trapped vehicle.

100% Botros but unfortunately we are mostly sheep and sheep only follow...
A large percentage of the population would defend to the death the politicians they support.(14 or 8)

Another large percentage is more preoccupied with tanning, going to the beach and clubbing (it's summer you can't blame them! pffff)

That leaves a tiny winy small percentage that would actually like to start a revolution and act but it's so tiny it would go unnoticed...

If indeed today's attack is related to the events in Syria, then Nassrallah's statement "You are fighting in Syria, We are fighting in Syria, Let's fight it out in Syria and leave Lebanon neutral" certainly proved to be naive in content and implementation. You cannot expect to send fighters to Syria and conquer whole cities and not expect the war or retaliation to come back at you in your own playground. Having said that, it is sad that innocent people are dying everywhere.... what a shame.

I condemn, hold in contempt and completely blame the M8/M14 Iranian/Saudi lapdogs for using the Lebanese people as pawns in their chess game of murder and mayhem while their masters resolve their difference at the expense of Lebanese people. May God have mercy and ease the suffering of the innocent.

thumb up because i hear ur distress. avoid going to lebanon this summer.

it could be FSA, it could be Asir's men.... it could be HA itself trying to play the victims to justify their arsenal!

So far 5 thumbs down for you Bandoul.........
If those 5 thumbs down were because they thumb the messenger not the message, that would be just shallow. If they thumbed you down because of the content, that is plain betrayal of Lebanon (it means those five are either Iran's or KSA followers).
As far as I am concerned, you hit the nail right on the head. 90% of Lebanon's problems have to do Iran/KSA power struggle in Lebanon, Syria and other places. HA is paid to propagate Iran's influence and Mustaqbal the same regarding KSA influence. Until then each will stoke the fires to make the other side uncomfortable. Waje up people, heed your concious, use your education and show that you are literate not merely carrying Diplomas while the brain is locked up by Secterianism and Hate. Stop following, so the so called leaders lose their influence and hence their grip on tranquility and prosperity.

Helo and Prime, thanks for you comments. Don't worry about my thumbs down because I really don't care. I was a strong supporter of M14, specifically LF but since 2005 the revolution has gone awry, in other words strayed off message. I feel terrible for the tourism season which is much needed by the Lebanese to keep afloat but above parties demonstrate time after time they simply don't care. They have their villas, maids and chauffeurs and they don't care how their constituents are suffering.

Over 20 other blasts outside of Dahieh did not prompt Lebanese to end their differences.

Why would the Dahieh blast be any different ? Because for the first time, a blast targeted Hezbollah with their own poison ?

If you want to END DIFFERENCES, then start by ENDING WEAPONS. Until Hezbollah surrenders it's illegal weapons to the lebanese state, there will alway be differences.

You cannot put an end to differences when the difference is pointing a you in the face, ready to shoot !
