Suleiman Urges Support for Army, Says State Must Oversee Army-People-Resistance Formula

President Michel Suleiman on Monday called for supporting the army so that it can become the only force that possesses arms in Lebanon, stressing that the state must oversee the so-called army-people-resistance equation.

“Commitment to the Baabda Declaration is what can protect Lebanon's unity and stability, as well as to the defense strategy that we proposed in the wake of the Baabda Decalaration,” Suleiman said in a speech on the occasion of moving to the summer presidential headquarters in Beiteddine.

"Commitment to the defense strategy would protect Lebanon from Israel and I stress that it would protect Lebanon and Lebanon's land exclusively," the president added.

He noted that the so-called army-people-resistance equation is capable of protecting Lebanon “on the condition that it is overseen by the Lebanese state.”

"The resistance cannot act unilaterally concerning the domestic or foreign affairs. For the sake of the resistance and in order to immunize it, we must abide by the proper administration of this equation,” Suleiman added.

“Let us all return to the interior, to our homeland, and let us devote our capabilities, strength and assets to defend our country,” the president went on to say, referring to Hizbullah's military intervention in Syria.

Suleiman called for “supporting the army instead of stabbing it in the back, launching accusations against it and making its mission more difficult.”

“Let us support this army so that it can become the only force that possesses arms and the assets to defend the country. I want to say that the national assets – and I mean the army, the state and the resistance – are not for a certain group or sect, but rather for the entire country,” the president added.

He warned that “the constitutional junctures are looming … and the presidential race will start soon,” urging the formation of a new cabinet that would “take care of the people's affairs.”

“This is what the constitution says. It gives the jurisdiction to form the cabinet to the president and the premier,” Suleiman added, stressing that he will not relinquish his powers pertaining to the cabinet formation process.

“I tell everyone that the cabinet must be formed as soon as possible and we are the guarantee,” the president said, saying a new cabinet representing all parties must accompany the relaunch of national dialogue, “which must also kick off as soon as possible.”

The President's home is Lebanon and he does not have a foreign protege to go to (unlike your Nasrallah whose home is Iran). I say he stays and Nasrallah goes home.

The best president in Lebanon's history? Time will tell; but, so far, he's doing what people (not filthy politicians) expect him to do. Que demander de plus ? ;-)

"and I mean the army, the state and the resistance – are not for a certain group or sect, but rather for the entire country,” the president added.

...... will the shia understand this???? No Islamic resistance in Lebanon anymore!!!! We are sick and tired of your sectarianism and monopoly of the resistance. Even if we don't make peace with Israel, we don't need this filthy resistance called HA which is nothing but a sectarian mafia that has destroyed our country. Laughable indeed, a sect claims monopoly over defending the country!!!!

I think the H.A./Shiites types understand that they pissed inside their tents, its wet, it stinks, and it is pay back time to Iran. I don't think there is anything they can do to get out of this big hole they fallen into.

When they proclaim "Islamic resistance", you got to read between the lines. "Islamic", the root of this designation is deeply rooted in Iranian agenda. When you couple the term "Islamic" with "resistance", which should be purely Lebanese endeavor, it contradicts with our interests and position vis-a-vis Israel and any resistance that Lebanon must pursue. So, who are they fooling? There is no genuine Lebanese resistance when it is created with Iranian agenda. This is what I think.

We need unity in Lebanon. Lets unite, and see how much the Lebanese "people" can achieve. The influences of foreign interests is designed to keep Lebanon at limbo and vulnerable. I think this President wants to do this, but he needs the people's backing not armed gangs and foreign armies.

Sorry Mr. president, Assad does not understand what the disassociation policy means, as he did not comprehend that his army was called Syrian occupiers from 1976 until 2005 and claimed all these years that the road to free Palestine is via Beirut, Tripoli, Zahle and Knat. Now he is telling HA, disassociation = no Iranian weapons = no Jobs = Pay electricity like all normal citizens.

We want the Shi3a sect to be a partner in building Lebanon and for that to happen HA must go and take with him Southern.

We need to protect the president from the enemies of the state. Mr. President bravo on your courageous stance, now let's make it legal by revoking the ministerial statement legitimizing the weapons of HA in the eyes of its supporters, then we can let the chips fall where they may.
