The United Nations Security Council is in agreement that Lebanon's stability should be maintained given the volatile regional situation and its impact on the country, reported An Nahar daily on Saturday.

It said that the Security Council is almost “unanimously in agreement to take important practical measures” that will protect Lebanon in light of the increased threats of the Syrian crisis.

A western diplomat told An Nahar on condition of anonymity: “All 15 Security Council members stress the need to preserve the country's stability and take measures to achieve that.”

He ruled out the possibility of issuing a resolution on the matter, but the measures may include “clearer international support for Lebanon's policy of disassociation that all Lebanese powers had approved.”

“This support will persuade the Lebanese sides involved in the Syrian unrest to end their actions,” he explained.

A diplomat at the Security Council told An Nahar that its members are seeking to hold an international conference on Lebanon, on the margins of the U.N. General Assembly in September, to support Lebanon based on the memorandum President Michel Suleiman had sent to U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon weeks ago.

Lebanon is sharply divided over the war in Syria with a number of border regions coming under shelling from Syria whether by regime forces or rebels.

Hizbullah has also openly acknowledged taking part in the fighting in support of President Bashar Assad.

The repeated violations prompted Suleiman in June to file a memorandum to the United Nations and Arab League.

Terrorists and criminals don't like the UN because it is in their blood to be violent, not diplomatic. That is why they view diplomatic channels such as the UN with fear, suspicion, and hostility.

Phoenix. Agree. Send boots on the ground. Strengthten the army. Reinforce the president. Strengthen the secret service.
All this will strengthen the lebanese state which will be in a stronger position to negotiate with Iran's party a gradual surrender of arm.

I'm sorry to have to say this, but perhaps Lebanon should learn something from Egypt. The moment that the army realised that there was a group (the Moslem Brotherhood) which was doing all it could to destroy democracy in the country they took severe action. Perhaps the Lebanese Army should do the same again Hizballah, especially now as so many of their fighters are tied down in the quagmire of Syria.

“the un support will persuade the lebanese sides involved in the syrian unrest to end their actions,” he explained.
great statement from the un but let us wait and see how they will translate it on the ground and how they will help to enforce president sleiman's memorandum on lebanon's neutrality vis a vis the syrian conflict based on previous baabda declaration.
