At least person was killed and several more injured in shelling on the central Damascus Ummayad Square on Monday morning, Syrian state media reported.
State television said one person had been killed and others wounded, while official news agency SANA said "initial information suggests six citizens were wounded by terrorist shelling... on Ummayad Square."
The shelling marked the second day in a row that the area has been targeted. On Sunday afternoon, a series of shells fell on the area, injuring around a dozen people and setting cars ablaze.
Ummayad Square is a central area of Damascus, close to a number of key buildings, including the state broadcasting authority, the national library and the Opera House where Syrian President Bashar Assad delivered a rare speech to supporters earlier this year.
On Sunday, 165 people were killed in violence throughout Syria, according to a toll from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights watchdog.
