The Israeli military said its forces attacked targets in Syria early Sunday after six rockets were launched from Syrian territory in two batches toward Israel in a rare attack from Israel's northeastern neighbor.

Israel initially said it responded with artillery fire into the area in Syria from where the first three rockets were fired. Later, the military said Israeli fighter jets attacked Syrian army sites, including a compound of Syria's 4th Division and radar and artillery posts, after another three rockets were fired from Syria.

Three rockets were fired Saturday evening from Syria, one of which hit the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights as another landed in Jordan and a third fell in Syrian territory, Israeli media reports said.

The Israeli military said security forces were searching for the attacker.

At least three explosions were heard in southern Lebanon's Tyre region at dawn on Friday, as Israel announced it was carrying out strikes in response to rocket fire.

"At least two shells fell near" a Palestinian refugee camp near Tyre city, said camp resident Abu Ahmad, who told AFP he "heard explosions."

The Israeli military struck targets in the Gaza Strip early Friday, pushing the region toward a wider conflagration after a day of rocket fire along Israel's northern and southern borders following two days of unrest at Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site. Gaza militants quickly fired off a new barrage of rockets, setting off air raid sirens across southern Israel.

The Israeli airstrikes set off at least four loud explosions in Gaza. The Israeli military said it struck a pair of tunnels and two weapons-manufacturing sites.

Israel blamed Palestinian groups on Thursday for a barrage of rockets fired from Lebanon, an Israeli army spokesperson said.

"We know for sure it's Palestinian fire," Lt. Colonel Richard Hecht told reporters.

The Israeli army said it intercepted rocket fire from Lebanon Thursday after clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians inside al-Aqsa Mosque -- Islam's third-holiest site -- drew warnings of retaliation from around the region.
