Al-Mustaqbal movement leader MP Saad Hariri on Thursday called for “real global solidarity” with the Syrian people aimed at “eradicating” Syrian President Bashar Assad from political existence.

“No elections in the history of humanity have been deplored and described with degrading terms such as the elections that granted Bashar Assad a new presidential term,” Hariri said in a communique.

Supporters of Syrian President Bashar Assad opened fire in the air and launched fireworks in several Lebanese regions as his expected election victory was officially announced on Wednesday evening, as others roamed the streets in convoys.

“Gunfire erupted in some of Beirut's suburbs and central Bekaa towns in celebration of Assad's win,” LBCI television reported.

Unknown gunmen on Tuesday opened fire at a Syrian polling station in the Jdeidet Yabous area near the border with Lebanon, which witnessed huge gatherings of Syrians who flocked to vote in their country's presidential election that got underway on Tuesday.

“Sniper gunshots from al-Zabadani mountain are targeting the polling station in the border area of Jdeidet Yabous,” LBCI television reported.

The Ministry of Interior on Saturday warned Syrian refugees that they must not travel to their country as of June 1, saying that otherwise their will lose their status as refugees.

The ministry announced in a released statement that Syrians and those registered with the UNHCR “must refrain from entering Syria as of June 1, 2014.”

Syrian President Bashar Assad met Sunday with former Lebanese General Security chief Maj. Gen. Jamil Sayyed, who said talks tackled the “cleaning” of Syrian areas near Lebanon's border from “terrorists” to pave the ground for greater “coordination” with the Lebanese Army.

A statement issued by Sayyed's office said the two-hour meeting in the morning touched on “the outcome of the Syrian army's military operations in terms of cleaning Syrian areas adjacent to the Lebanese border in Akkar and the Bekaa from terrorist groups.”

Candidates for Syria's presidential election can begin registering on April 21, when the date for the vote will be announced, a government source told Agence France Presse on Thursday.

"On Monday April 21, the Council of the People (parliament) will meet to open registration for presidential candidates and set a date for the election," the source said.

Syrian President Bashar Assad said Wednesday that key ally Moscow had helped re-establish "a multipolar world", as he met with a high-level Russian delegation in Damascus.

The delegation was delivering a message from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has provided political, military and financial backing to Assad's regime since the outbreak of a revolt in March 2011.

Syria's President Bashar Assad made a rare appearance on Sunday to attend prayers at a mosque in the capital Damascus, state television reported.

Assad, who has only been seen in public a few times since the Syrian conflict erupted in March 2011, was shown at the a-Hamad mosque in the capital's northwest for prayers marking the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed.

President Bashar Assad of Syria, which has been ravaged by conflict for almost three years, said Monday his country is being confronted by a major offensive by Islamist extremists.

"The country is facing a takfiri ideology," Assad said, using a term for Sunni Muslim extremists.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said Thursday a peace conference on Syria slated for January should lay the groundwork for "absolutely free" elections.

"The ground should be prepared for holding an absolutely free election with no preconditions," Rouhani told visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, the presidency website reported.
