British-born painter, writer and sculptor Leonora Carrington, considered one of the last of the original surrealists, has died, Mexico's National Arts Council confirmed Thursday. She was 94.

Carrington was known for her haunting, dreamlike works that often focused on strange ritual-like scenes with birds, cats, unicorn-like creatures and other animals as onlookers or seeming participants.

Hollywood Deal for Film of Bin Laden Killing

U.S. film giant Columbia Pictures said Tuesday it has won the U.S. distribution rights for a film about the killing of Osama bin Laden, to be directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow.

Bigelow and journalist-turned screenwriter Mark Boal, who won Oscars for Iraq bomb squad movie "The Hurt Locker" in 2010, had already been working on a project about the Al-Qaeda chief's capture or killing, before his death on May 2.

Academy Award winning songwriter Joseph Brooks, who was awaiting trial on rape charges, died from an apparent suicide in his Manhattan home, police said Sunday.

Brooks, 73, wrote "You Light up My Life," which won the Oscar for best song, from the 1977 film of the same name, which he also wrote and directed. He also won a Grammy for the song.

The flamboyant hat worn by Princess Beatrice at last month's British royal wedding was Sunday sold for the princely sum of £81,100 ($131,652; 93,171 euros) on internet auction site eBay.

Proceeds from the sale of the hat, designed by Irish milliner Philip Treacy, will be split between two charities: the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, and British charity Children in Crisis.
