China Police Shoot Man Dead at Train Station

Chinese police on Wednesday shot dead a Uighur man who allegedly attacked several people at a train station with a concrete brick, officials said, in the country's latest deadly station incident.

Officers in the northern Chinese city of Xian opened fire on the man after he attacked "people buying tickets," the city's rail police said in a social media post, adding he later died of injuries.

China Starts World's Longest Bullet Train Line

China launched service Wednesday on the world's longest high-speed rail route, the latest milestone in the country's rapid and -- sometimes troubled -- super fast rail network.

The opening of the new 2,298-kilometer (1,425-mile) line between Beijing and Guangzhou means passengers will be whisked from the capital to the southern commercial hub in just eight hours, compared with the 22 hours previously required.

Migrant Workers Clash with Locals, Police in China

Scores of people were injured when police in southern China broke up clashes between migrant workers and the local population in the latest unrest to hit the nation, a rights group said Tuesday.

Police stepped in to break up fighting between the workers largely from Sichuan province and the locals in Shaxi township in Guangdong province Monday night, the Information Centre For Human Rights and Democracy said.
